It certainly helps but it's not required. Dethklok is entry level death metal so even if you're not accustomed to it it's easy to listen to and the cookie monster vocals are relatively clear. Being satirical helps too.

Weird, I found Dethklok songs to be the only stuff with the lead singer screaming that I've been able to understand.
Which is why I actually liked it, good instruments and actual vocals instead of banshee wailing.
S1 and S2 were great, but S3 wasn't that funny anymore. Too many non-metal songs, I guess. I haven't watched S4 yet.
