Off-topic question for SW buffs. Why are years numbered based on the Battle of Yavin? It doesn't seem at all as pivotal as the Battle of Endor. Neither Sith Lord died and they easily started working on a second Death Star. Wouldn't the Battle of Endor be considered the true end of the war and the best place to start numbering years?

Basically because it's a way of using ANH as the focal point of the calender, that way everything takes place X number of years before or after ANH.
In-universe, the justification is that it was the major turning point of the rebellion where they dealt a serious blow to the Empire and Palpatine finally started taking them seriously. Endor would make more sense, but again the main reason is to justify using the first movie as the focal point of the calendar.
