Yeah, I actually started running this year because my sister asked me if I wanted to do a 5k with her and I couldn't think of a good excuse to get out of it, so we'll probably escape for a bit to go for a walk/jog and relax.
Part of the frustration is that since we're all gathering at my sister's tiny place, there aren't many places to escape to. My parents can go back to their hotel room, my brother lives near my sister, but I always feel a little trapped. At least back when we had Christmas at my parents' house, I could frolic off to my room when I needed a break. No such relief at my sister's.

The best advice I can give to someone who feels like they aren't strong in these puzzles, is to remember that a lot of breaking a cryptogram is about assumptions.
Consider the nature of the English language. How many two letter words are there? Three letter words? And how common might certain letters be in our language? Do certain letters tend to appear in certain parts of many words?
Once you've chosen your assumption(s), follow it through and see what you've revealed...if anything.
I tend to use multiple codes at once which often require several conflicting assumptions...but I will always leave a path for finding a solution.

Sometimes. Many letters will have two possible stand ins, others will have only one possibility. The spectacularly vicious code I posted last saturday gave 1/4 of the alphabet 3 possible solutions.
I do this for two reasons. 1) Single code lines are really, really easy and tend to get solved in like 3 or 4 minutes. 2) I figure once many people grab a key word or two, they'll just google their way to a solution.
So the layered coding helps slow things down.
