It was dark and edgy for the sake of being dark and edgy. Also pic related ended up being completely goddamn pointless since Dr Light ended up not being the real killer and was just shocking for the sake of being shocking

Well, I just reread it and it's real strength is being a tearjerker.
When Ralph is trying to talk at the funeral and when Tim's dad dies hit me really hard every time I read it.
Meltzer is just so fucking good a ratcheting up the tension and emotion in a scene.
>>

Say what you will about the maerial but I think in terms of craft, Bard did a good job with The pacing for a newbie to comics

that whole scene with Boomerang and Jack Drake's dad brought the feels for me

if you read the pages by themselves, they do nothing but the build was what got the most impact like some tragic scene of an opera

Identity Crisis is not as bad as people say it is but it neither that amazing. It got hampered by the edge realistic grim dark realism of that time. Surprised it hasn't made return in poplar consciousness or at least in DC film universe as this is the tone that gets their dicks hard as evident with Dark Knight and Man of Steel.
>>
>>78123230
Good post, but are you drunk?
You seem rather discombobulated.
>>
>>78123293
hung over lol bright screen hurting my eyes.

meant to type Brad not Bard, the build was supposed to be build up, edge needed a y to be edgy and so on and so forth.

forgive my grammatical errors, anon.
>>
It killed and "ruined" characters people actually cared about. To cape comic fans, the purpose of death in fiction is to get rid of poorly developed fodder characters (not to inspire an emotional reaction). As long as this checks out, they don't care about how "dark and edgy" something is.
>>
The rape pages are in!
>>
>>78123413
I don't even get why Jack Drake had to die. Wasn't one of Tim's defining features that set him apart from other Robins the fact that he had living parents.
Also people do care about cape characters dying. I know I got mad as fuck when Kid Devil bit it. But then again Titans dying is nothing new
>>

Identity Crisis would of been one of the Watchmen/TDKR type sellers if it was released it in the 80s.

Identity Crisis is good man.
>>
>>78122693
It exemplifies everything that makes Brad Meltzer's comics bad. Horrible jobbing, lame ass sentiment, edgy for the sake of making capes edgy, kills characters for little reason and is just incredibly disappointing and boting to slog through
>>
>>78123507
>I don't even get why Jack Drake had to die.

It's sad, because even if I never actually read the Batman books with him in it, I liked him in PAD YJ and even in John's TT run. Honestly, the best thing to do with Tim, especially in the New 52, would be to kill him off, because jesus christ New 52 Tim is a trainwreck of bad

Morrison' thoughts on it
>The first time I read it I was kind of outraged. I thought this was just… why? What the fuck is this, really? It wasn't even normal. It was outrageous. It was preposterous because of the Elongated Man with his arms wrapped several times around the corpse of his wife. I thought something is broken here. Something has gone so wrong in this image

First of all, it's needlessly dark. Okay, so we found out that Doctor Light raped Sue Dibny and a handful of leaguers covered it up through mind wipes, Jean Loring turned out to be a crazy murderous bitch and Ray fucks off to another dimension.

Now, what have we learned? What has been accomplished? What was the point of anything that just happened or what was just revealed?

And most importantly: why the fuck should anyone care about any of it?
>>
>>78126085
Morrison praises it in Supergods though.
>>
>>78126302
It's the way the scene was written that was retarded. Everyone basically waits their turn to job to make Slade look good and the ways Slade defeats people like Wally and Kyle was incredibly stupid.
>>

People say this a lot, but I really don't think comics fans look at events the way you say they do. Convergence had some very immediate importance in the DCU and is almost universally seen as underwhelming, whereas something like, say, Peter David's run on X-Factor barely affected anything outside of his own book and it's remembered as one of the best X-related books of the past ten years or so.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Does this nigga even know who he is talking about? He's the master of Marvel, the king of comics, the future Editor-in-Chief. He has 2 shows based on his creations, Powers and Jessica Jones, and someday Miles Morales will be the next Spider-man in movies or TV.

Sorry Grant, but Bendis is the King of Marvel. Those on Team Bendis will guard any and all storylines created by Bendis, or expand on it.

Once he finally runs Marvel, we will enter an era of Bendis continuity. As long as there's a franchise with a movie or TV show, it won't be safe from Bendis Continuity.

He's the future Editor-in-Chief of Marvel, and the other writers at marvel know it. The ones that aren't with him are off doing Star Wars.

Wait, why the fuck would they kill the Phantom Lady? Was the point of this comic to just kill off or emotionally scar every mystery man in Opal City?

Let me explain Identity Crisis in a nutshell.

There is this couple, a superhero couple, they are the sweetest fucking couple on the planet bar no one.

One of them is murdered, just before revealing to her husband that she is pregnant, might've been on his fucking birthday.
There's a funeral, then an investigation, during this investigation, we find the nice lady that was murdered a few pages after being shown what an absolute sweetheart she is, was raped. They mindfucked her rapist and the one guy in the situation to go "Hey wait a minute, this seems unethical."

A few pages later, his sidekick's father was murdered and somebody tried the same on the Atom's Ex-girlfriend.

Except not, Atom's Ex was responsible for ALL of these killings. First she killed her best friend by not quite accident because she wanted to get back with Atom, rekindling their romance over a minor emergency. Then because of reasons, she puts a hit out on Robin's dad, and hung herself, either to draw guilt away from herself or execute herself for all the deaths she was now culpable for.

So now Bruce is fucked because he finds out his friends mindfucked him. Robin is much the same because his father died in his arms. And Ralph is just fucking gone.

Identity Crisis, was shit suffering porn. The only good thing about it, was that it lead to some of the most nailbitingly AWESOME scenes a few years later in 52.

>>78122693
This is like the equivalent of finding out the people you've grown up with for decades include at least one hidden homicidal psychopath, and one past traumatic event no one has ever spoken about. There's never been any indication that Jean Lorring wanted to get back with her ex, Ray Palmer, and that she was willing to kill one of their friends to unite them in grief.
Identity Crisis is a stand alone story. I don't know if it crosses over with any specific issues. But it's just one of those weird DC stories where it's a universe altering miniseries that shakes the very foundations of their bullshit, and that's all it is to me. Ronnie Raymond is dead, and you have to google him to realize who he even is now.
