iv'e read book 1 and i'm half way through book 2
does it get better or worse?

Love it. It gets better, then there's a bit at the start of the third act that gets a bit meandering and cold, but ends on a high note. Least for me.

Mixed at best. New Cassidy looks weird and doesn't have the sunglasses, but his design is growing on me.
Black Tulip doesn't make any sense to me though.

Worse. High point was New York. By the time Cassidy does the inevitable it had completely fallen apart. Really I think the only things that were consistently good were most of the flashbacks.
It's a pretty good story, I'd say stick with it
