While I was watching the trailer, at first I started thinking about how I'd have to research which arthouse theater in the city an hour's trainride away from me I'd be able to see it at for one night only a month or two after it's release. Then I realized it's actually not a foreign film and all of Laika's films so far have had wide release so I'll actually be able to see this at the local movie theater. I'm pretty hyped.

I know it's annoying sometimes, but for a small studio like Laika, you really do. Stop-motion animation is very much a dying medium and they have to rely on star power to get people to watch their films. It's just the way it is unfortunately.

What's sad is that people think they need star power for shit like this. A lot of these Laika films have a marketing problem because they look to buying names as a form of marketing. It isn't as effective as using that money to try to make yourself stand out.
Then again, maybe their hands are tied by the general audiences. If a movie aims to represent an East Asian movie with an appropriate cast, people will see it as a weird foreign film. Then that would make hiring no name white people an even more offensive move. Being not Disney is suffering.
