We knew Claire was pandering from the get-go. The difference is that Claire and Marten meant something was actually happening in the comic, that there was progression. There was the hope, however little might have been, that something interesting could have come out of it, even if it was just a tasteful and bland examination of a relationship with a trans person. I don't know what makes you say this; I've mostly seen people point out various versions of what I just did, that there's literally no foreshadowing, implication or detail suggesting that he'd ever had that notion before the strip itself. On the contrary, it seems that he had originally been setting up Emily for a bigger part as New Hannelore, with the other two interns as basically foils. Notice also that the beachhouse arc was right before the third intern was quietly put on a bus and never mentioned again; before that and up to the point where Claire confesses to being a man, she's in and has a roughly equal part; afterward she's just gone instantly because Jeph needed to derail Claire for points.
