The latter had a good emotional hook. It was funny watching little Splinter mimicing katas in the old comic/movie and I felt was sad for the poor critter seeing his master die. The "Yoshi mutates or reincarnates into Splinter" origins can be good, too (like in the Nick show where his daughter is raised by his worst enemy). Splinter just finding some book lying around makes me feel nothing but contempt for how little the writers cared about the source material.

Turtle Power's a pretty solid documentary on the turtles but it only goes up until the first trilogy of live action movies.
