The reason is so that you empathize with the kids, for young school children simple algebraic equations seem like einsteinian theoretical physics. If they asked "a^2+b^2=___" then people with even rudimentary math skills would just answer it and wonder why the kids were so stupid instead of feeling cheated by an unjust system
