So I was thinking about writing a story about Dipper getting tempted in the bubble, and I came up with a timeline of temptation.He makes a deal with the avatar of the bubble that if he can endure the temptation, it will let Mabel go. The avatar says that Dipper doesn't want to admit his true desire, so it eases him in. He goes to his old school where everyone likes him, photo day went perfect, and he has all the valentine's he could ever want. He asks if being popular and liked was his deepest desire, but the avatar persists. Dipper turns out to be the teacher in his dream world, so he asks if being adult was the true wish, and the avatar says that's only a part of it, and that it's more accurate to say he wants to stop being a kid. The avatar takes him to his home and shows off all the learning material Dipper has, and tells Dipper that ultimately, he had a hidden motivation to work hard, and this motivation was his deepest desire. The avatar shows Dipper his relationship with Mabel, and says that this relationship was a coping mechanism. Dipper's real desire, it turns out, was that his parents would be proud of him, and would acknowledge him, as he feels that with it being twins, this put too much responsibility on the parents, and they drifted away. All his academic success was an attempt to win them over, his dreams of fame were just a way of getting them back, and he loved Mabel so much because they would be there for each other when their parents were not. Dipper's parents appear, and apologise for every slight they ever caused him. They plead for a chance to make it up to him. This is Dipper's ultimate test.

Alex could have made 3 seasons but failed to make his show the way he wanted to because of Disney. He never had a chance to make the show how he wanted but he could have done more to make it less compacted in season 2. The story was rushed and suffered badly because of it.

I started watching the show mid-season 2, so my perspective is sort of limited. It's hard to imagine Bill being so different. But, honestly, I don't think a Slendy-style antagonist would work for the show. Or, at least, not if he were meant to serve as the primary antagonist.
Silent, unknowable villains are great for horror, but Gravity Falls isn't a horror. A villain who doesn't speak would run counter to its strengths. Although the show has moments with good atmosphere or suspense, funny dialogue delivered by characters with big, colourful personalities is what makes up the bulk of episodes. And I'd argue that's also the reason why most of us like the show so much.

I don't think Bill's personality is the real issue here. He worked well in Dreamscapers and he was excellent in Sock Opera. The stakes felt high enough, largely because Bill seemed like a credible threat in both. He had a plan, and when he was onscreen he was always working to execute it. His proactivity gave an impression of competence.
By contrast, Bill has been been largely passive or reactive since burning the Journals. He's literally sitting around doing nothing for a lot of his appearances, and he's failed to respond to Dipper's actions so far. Bill arrogance in disregarding the the threat Dipper poses is disappointingly incompetent from viewers' perspectives. Worse, it's boring.
With the revelation that Bill's forces are trapped in the town, there's not much urgency to the heroes' struggle. The town is already totalled; Bill has accomplished what he could; and, although Ford and the townspeople are captured, they aren't really suffering. You get the sense it doesn't matter if they defeat Bill today or a month from now.

Honestly, the linguistic differences of 4chan from the rest of the internet, even from board to board, is one of the things that kept me coming back because it was just fascinating to try and figure out. Yeah, this is really well put. There aren't any stakes right now and the characters in the last episode weren't acting like there were any stakes either. Bill was a scarier presence in TLM when he wasn't even in the episode (in person in the present).
The "Bill doesn't kill Dipper because he doesn't see him as a threat" doesn't really jibe to me with his actions in Sock Opera either, why did he even worry about Dipper getting in the way back then if he figures he can't do anything?
Obviously, they're not really going to have Bill kill Dipper but I wish he had earnestly TRIED to kill him because why not? Why not just eliminate everyone you run across who has any idea about you and what's going on?
Turning everyone to stone or gold is pretty boring too, some creative torture/torment for the characters would have been better. The Preston thing was good, fucking with Ford and Dipper was pretty good, but it stopped quickly.
Bill has spent a lot of time now just sitting around in the Fearamid while his friends dance badly while wearing goofy party hats. It's dull and the build up before was pretty great.
Like people have said before yes you can justify/explain why it makes sense for this to happen but that doesn't make it entertaining.

With the added perspective of Bill's history with Ford, and the speech he gave while burning the Journals in Weirdmageddon, I'd say Bill's motivation in Sock Opera wasn't really about Dipper at all. Instead, he's always been concerned with the threat posed by Ford, and by extension Ford's research.
Contrary to what he said when he was trying to sweet talk Dipper into a deal, Bill doesn't have a high opinion of Dipper's capabilities. Instead of working to remove Dipper from the town, he tried to destroy the laptop and journal 3. So you can assume he thought taking away Dipper's source of information would neutralize him as a threat. In that sense, the episodes are consistent.

Yeah, that's my take on it as well. The whole scenario is telegraphing Bill's failure from miles away, and consequently it doesn't feel as urgent as it could. Even though Bill's actions can be read as consistent with his character, it's frustrating for us because we do know Dipper's going to help defeat him. And it'll happen because Bill failed to take action even when he had warning.

Fair enough, but:
1. He still should be concerned with any information about him or a way to stop him Ford may have given Dipper by this point, or possibly others. If he'd been watching him he'd have known that Ford was spending a lot of time with Dipper (we know he shared his files on Bill with Dipper) so killing Dipper would make sense on the basis that Ford has certainly personally given him information, plus he's spent a lot of time with the journals. To someone reasonably intelligent, eliminating those close to Ford just makes sense, especially since it would be so easy to do.
2. Actually, it's kind of lame that we don't have a brief scene of Bill telling a henchman to eliminate Ford, either, when he first merges the worlds. It may have been sheer luck that Bill wasn't beaten right off the bat by Ford's gun. He doesn't do anything to address the Ford threat either until Ford actually shoots him, and depending on whether the gun works or not, defeats him right out of the gate.
Again, all of these things could be explained away and justified as in character but the long and short of it as, as someone else said before, it makes Bill very passive/reactive, reads as incompetent, and makes him feel like not much of a threat which hurts the narrative. Since in a sense the plot and mysteries of the show have all been leading up to this, it becomes a significant problem instead of just a minor annoyance. As you said, maybe with Bill "as a person" you could say it makes sense but characters are just tools to serve the plot and in that sense it's a let down.

When he is rescued he is a depressed, useless shade of his former self. He is extremely dependant on Stan now. Agoraphobic and crying and useless and no longer an adventurer. He wasn't naive, he just thought that he had subdued the demon.
Stan is jaded because of Ford's. And angry. But he doesn't know about William, and so he is fooled as well by the blue triangle at least at the begining of the story. What happened with Ford makes him distant and alone. He has anger issues which he lets go of sometimes but he sends Soos to do the fighting.
Also they're codependant and incesty I guess, this is what I have for now.

But when you think about it, capturing Ford is the only important thing Bill has gotten right since arriving in Gravity Falls. He was wrong about Gideon's reliability, Dipper's resilience, the effectiveness of Mabel's bubble, and even whether he'd be able to leave the town. So his one meaningful success so far is owed to dumb luck.

Exactly. It would be fine on its own, but everything else we've seen involves either Bill actively fucking up (not noticing they're on Under the Dome all of a sudden; incidentally that show sucks) or literally leaning back and doing fucking nothing. It's always better to see villains being overly precautious instead of just letting everything slide. Also their doing dumbass things so early on kills the tension.
I guess it will be interesting to talk about after the last episode. At this point, the only way they could save Bill competence in the Weirdmageddon arc would be if he does have some grand Xanatos style bit everything is playing into or conversely he dgaf because he knows or expects he'll lose, but it's no big deal. I don't expect either, though, and what it boils down to is probably a lackluster episode compared to the better episodes like NWHS, NMM, and DaMvTF or even the first two Bill episodes. It's just a shame because Bill got lots of attention for seeming unique and different but in the finale he's a very run of the mill kiddie fare character.
Now, if the character stuff is great, that won't matter. But after Escape from Reality, I don't expect that, either. An even bigger problem for me is that they mucked up Mabel's character arc and the Mabel and Dipper character arc. The Stan and Ford resolution is an open question but the fact that they've hardly spent any time on their relationship since Ford returned is a concern.

It varies a lot but I've seen stuff where he's helping Reverse Pacifica and Reverse Gideon. I suspect there's not as much of him interacting with them because the most popular fanfic is blatant shipper fuel and it's more popular to ship any Bill with the twins. Of course it's more common to have Will be a nice/good guy the Reverse twins are still forcing to do bad things but I don't like useless Bill either.

He's depressed and unstable. A little lethargic. I like edgy pain, so some of that will happen to explain his current state. Stanley will be overprotective, but Ford needs almost constant care, so he tells him to keep and eye on the twins.
Forgot to add that Stanley would also slightly resent Ford for taking up time that belonged to his son who also needed chronic help.
