Writer: Brian Michael Bendis
Artist: David Marquez

>“The original CIVIL WAR is one of the most important Marvel comics ever, and we are all very excited to have come up with what we hope is a story worthy of the title,” echoes Bendis. “If you are scared of earth shattering Marvel events where no one is safe…be afraid, be very afraid.”

They haven't even finished Secret Wars and they already have another Civil War?

>Civil war happens in '06-'07
>Status quo lasts basically until '10
>But then Scott and Logan schism in '10
>Cap and Tony back at each others' throats in '14
>Secret Wars III apparently fixes Tony/Cap, kills Cyclops in '15, X-Men and Avengers sort-of unified internally in the new Earth-8
>But wait there's more - CIVIL WAR II in '16

I don't understand why they even bother hyping hero vs. hero events because that's all Marvel's been for the last decade, either with the Avengers or with the X-Men (or both).

I know he's just being a good company boy but I would never read an event written by someone who says this.
>>
>>78010398
>Secret Wars III
I'm kinda casual but why III? I've read Secret Wars with Beyonder teleporting heroes and villains to some planet to fight, I believe that was number I. There was also Secret War with Fury taking Logan, Spidey, Cap and some others to Latveria, but that was singular, one "War", so it should not count. When and what was Secret Wars II?
>>
>Apocalypse Wars
>Civil Wars 2
WE WANT THE MOVIE AUDIENCE
>>
>>78010393
They already announced an X-Men/mutant event called Apocalypse Wars.
>>
>>78010535
Secret Wars III (just called Secret Wars) it's when Doom takes over the power of the Beyonders and recreates the currently decaying multiverse and serve as its God. It ends with mostly status quo but the Fantastic Four are disbanded and Doom is good now.
>>
>>78010535

The Beyonder dicking around trying to learn to be a real boy, it's not very good

>>78010528

He's not wrong, importance is not a synonym for quality
>>
>>78010612
Yeah, I know that Secret Wars III is the current one. I was asking about Secret Wars II.
>>
>>78010649

oh and it was a year or two after the first Secret Wars
>>
>>78010535
Secret Wars II was when the Beyonder came back to Earth and tried to understand why humans are humans. It was the first event full of tie ins if I'm not mistaken. It ran in Avengers, X-Men and some other books. Secret War doesn't count.

Secretly everyone is a Bendis fan. Sure people here like to feel they have superior taste by calling him shit, hack or whatever they want. They feel better knowing their current indy darling is way better than the top dog at Marvel because it somehow validates the comics they are reading and that's fine.

And yeah the things people complain about Bendis are true as well. He likes to write for trades with slow pacing arcs and his characteristic dialogue. Not to mention putting the stories over any kind of continuity fans want to be acknowledged.

But it's also true that what he does is exactly what Marvel needs. He actually puts some effort in trying to change and advance these characters. You people always criticize his changes because you don't want your characters to advance that fast. Maybe if a change is teased and slowly build then in ten years you will accept it but Bendis doesn't have ten years. He wants to move forward himself not wait until his grandsons do the job for him. You hate him for that but it's what Marvel need. His stories also appeal to the readers. He writes what they want to read. Compare Guardians of the Galaxy against Inhumans. Both had the same number of variants but Bendis still won because he writes the team of Guardians people are interested in reading, accuse him of waifuing or whatever but people accpeted Kitty as Star-Lord because Bendis sold her to them in the first issue. He also put the Avengers on the map and some might say he did it by using gimmicks and events but he was the one who dared to pull these gimmicks and events, and they worked. People liked it. Bendis does know what people want. /co/ of course has other ideas, and most likely those ideas would send Marvel into bankruptcy again.

Bendis works, and /co/ loves him. All the hate messages are just the way they have to show their love.

Sorry mate, but Bendis is the King of Marvel. Those on Team Bendis will guard any and all storylines created by Bendis, or expand on it. I mean look at this shit >>77869998

Once he finally runs Marvel, we will enter an era of Bendis continuity. As long as there's a franchise with a movie or TV show, it won't be safe from Bendis Continuity.

He' the future Editor-in-Chief of Marvel, and the other writers at marvel know it. The ones that aren't with him are off doing Star Wars.

Yeah, it's actually surprising. Usually though the reason a Marvel book charts high is because it's a debut volume, like the hardcover version of Fear Itself or something, and then it slides off the Top 10. I don't think I saw Fear Itself on the 2013 or 2014 charts in general, let alone top 10. Civil War somehow managing to stay on the top 10 is pretty surprising.

We know he did it to Bobby but he did the same thing to FlashVenom in GotG a while back. We all know it sells outstandingly, that's what I was saying. Marvel just keeps pushing it like how DC pushes Killing Joke and TDKR and All-Star Superman, except those are at least actually good.

It's quite literally a meme comic. Someone wants to get into Marvel comics, they see Civil War, they've HEARD of it before and it's a self-contained graphic novel. This is a recipe for a lot of fucking money, and most of these people being braindead turn around and tell everyone what a nerd they are for loving Civil War, causing the cycle to continue.

To be fair though, it is greatly enjoyed by the types of fans who will read or not read a book based solely on whether it "matters" or not.

That's not Secret Wars III faggot.

Hickman's Secret War is Secret War FIVE.

Secret Wars 3 was an Englehart Fantastic Four storyline that wrote Beyonder out of continuity by way of having him merge with Molecule Man and the retcon that the Beyonder was a baby Cosmic Cube.

Secret War 4 was Bendis's vanity project from around 2004 that wrote Nick Fury out of continuity until Secret Invasion.

Fury and a bunch of heroes tried to kill the democratically elected government of Doom's homeland that took over after Doom got banished to hell, when it got leaked that the new regime was a bunch of arms merchants who were behind the Mad Tinkerer (who supplies tech to all of the villains) on the downlow and failed. The whole coup failed miserably and the new President is retaliating and tries to murder Fury's group of heroes with a legion of knock-off villains pretending to be existing big bads, which included rip-offs of Diamondback, Jack O'Lantern, and Hobgoblin that were pretending to be Rachel, Jason Macendale, and Roderick Kingsley.

Between the bullshit he pulled with Heinberg (who is higher up the food chain of importance, in terms of people Disney would gladly suck the dick off to keep them involved with Disney and it's various companies, his bullshit with the movies that led to Disney letting Feig banish Bendis and co from having ANY further say in how the movies are put together, AND the fact that he couldn't fucking make Iron Man a huge fucking seller?

NEVER FUCKING EVER will he be made EiC.

Hell, the fucker will probably run to DC like a coward the moment he realizes he's fucked and will never be EiC at Marvel.

This.

Pissing off Allan Heinberg basically killed Bendis of ever getting in a position of power at Marvel. Disney has long memories and Heinberg has produced SEVERAL highly profitable TV shows for Disney that made more money than Bendis ever could make.

The recent shit with the TV folks getting banned from working on the movies will seal his fate, if the Heinberg debacle didn't already render Bendis doomed to never get promoted

Secret Wars is selling like 150k+ an issue or something.

Why would Marvel stop doing that?
>>
>>78016727
No. Marvel keeps doing them every year because they sell tons. The more events the better.

At least DC has tried having their big events with close to a year in between them.
If SW comes out on schedule then there will be like four months between SW and Civil War II.
>>

>>
>>78017205

DC only does a huge one every few years, with minor ones once a year. Most of the time they're just oneshots and the series itself too or they disrupt a single book or set of books.

Like Robin War is disrupting the assorted Robin books right now but everything else is untouched compared to Civil War II where we already know everything is going to get fucked over in a few months.

If this effects Vision I'm going to be so pissed off. I wanted to pick up a few other ANAD titles but the constant status quo restarts is too much of a turn off for me.

Typical anti-Bendis brigade. You guys are the worst of the worst. Always crying because Marvels best writer is reinvigorating comics with his top selling stories. I bet you guys are the same idiots crying about the X-men too. Well too bad, his X-men run is highly praised everywhere else like reddit, and will go down as one of the best. Issue 600 took old and boring characters and reinvigorated them into a new progressive age. You guys need to catch up instead of staying stuck in the past.

And there is nothing you can do to stop the Bendis train, lol.

>>
>>78017649

Isn't it sad?

I was thinking today what comics are going to be celebrated in 30 years the way TDKR, or the Killing Joke and the like are today and it's sad to know Civil War is probably one of them. Casual fans eat it up.
>>
>>78017550
>Like Robin War is disrupting the assorted Robin books right now but everything else is untouched compared to Civil War II
That's cause Robin War is a crossover, not a full blown event. Forever Evil is the only "real" event DC's had since Flashpoint. i.e. It's own miniseries, tie ins interrupting books, original tie ins, actual consequences, possible books leading up to it, etc
Robin War is more like the X Men crossover they just announced or Black Vortex.
And even then DC has cut down on the crossovers. Even Truth over in the Superman line is just a shared status quo. Those books used to have a crossover interrupting every storyline of Supergirl's. And Endgame had oneshots instead of interrupting shit.
>>
>>78017730
>I forgot Convergence again

But does anyone truly care or want to remember
>>
>>78017649
Yes. Everyone outside of the internet thinks it. This, Secret Wars I and Infinity Gauntlet are the only events casuals know.
>>
>>78017649
Isn't Civil War one of their best selling trades? Because of course Marvel would try to make it seem more important if it already still sells well.
>>
>>78017759
Casuals don't know Infinity Gauntlet.
>>
>>78017718
No it won't be. Marvel is the only one pushing its praise, pretty much every outlet treats it either as bad or medicore.
>>
>>78017847

They do now because of the movies.

They'll only be able to tell you "Thanos is in it"
>>
Okay, so, I haven't been paying too much attention to the internet for the couple of days but, didn't they just restart the universe? Isn't a little soon for fucking Civil War?
>>

>>
>>78017847
>Casuals don't know what the entire MCU is leading to
Yes they do. Like everything else, they haven't read it, but they know what it is.
>>
>>78017871

Civil War has been one of Marvel's best selling trades since it was first collected though... Someone has to like it.
>>
>>78017902
They did, but the movie's coming out and they gotta get on that.
>>
>>78017902
Marvel has been pushing event after event after event for years now. They usually have two somehow in the same year now, not including crossovers.
>>
>>78017916

Popularity =/= quality. It's a casual friendly event because if you don't know anything about the characters it's not the character assassination everyone else sees it as. And casuals like heroes vs. heroes, which is also why Secret Wars is the only other popular event from Marvel.
>>
>>78017902

They didn't restart it they essentially just renumbered everything back to issue 1 and created a new status quo where multiple earths are aligned on a new world with a few soft retcons like DC's original Crisis.

It's just par for the course at this point. Events are killing Marvel's quality.
>>
>>78017871
Not really. Everyone outside the internet loves it.

Marvel has a movie coming out soon called Civil War. So it's the best time to start another one up in the comics since 'Civil War' will be on everyone's mind. And while the original war had problems it was still a fun read. I'm looking forward to this event.

The TPB of Civil War has been a consistent top 10 seller for Marvel for years now, and not just in comic shops but outside to casual buyers at bookstores. Compare that to other collected events that manage to get on the top 10 list (only because it's a new book that year) and then slide off the Top 10 (AvX, Age of Ultron--though that one might get a boost this year because of the movie sharing the same title), or worse, don't sell enough outside of comic shops to even show up on the chart the next year (Siege, Fear Itself).
>>

>>
>>78017649
It's important just because it set the tone and setting for Marvel for the past 10 years.

If someone asks me where to start with Marvel, I recommend them to pick their favorite character and start a run, to read Planet Hulk or to read Civil War and find out what characters are interesting from that. For a long time you needed to have read Civil War to get a good introduction, as almost every fucking body appeared in CW.

If someone had to read one event to be up to date, what else would you suggest? Fucking Fear Itself?

Yay! Even more hamfisted writing.

The sad thing is that Civil War could actually have been good.

Superhero accountability, that is rarely looked at and is a problem where multiple sides can look at the situation and come to different but sane and rational conclusions.

Or you could just write one side as having extradimensional gulags and the Starkjugend.

Marvel has an awful tendency of ruining their own universe because of movie tie ins. Back In Black for Spider-man 3, Thanos returning because of Guardians, I used to have more examples but those are the worst offenders.

I'm just terrified that now that Bendis lost his Ultimate Marvel sandbox he is going to bring that shit to mainstream Marvel.
>>
>>78023737
Thanos was going to come back eventually movie or not movie. Marvel never planned Thanos Imperative to be his end, mainly because nobody at Marvel's offices read it or knows it exists.

True, of course. but did you read the Avengers book he returned in? Terrible, rushed garbage that shat on the amazing ending and sacrifice of Star Lord and Nova.

No. The only things actually retconned by OMD itself is that MJ and Peter were never married and were just in a serious relationship all that time, and Harry and Aunt May didn't die.

Peter still revealed his identity during Civil War, but Reed + Strange + Tony cast a super-magical-tech-science spell that erased everyone's memory of Spider-man's identity. Tony had done the same thing back in the 80s so it's not like the tech for it didn't already exist.
