Is Bill Watterson a genius?
>>
>>77994249
if genius means boring
wtf is he even saying? "i wish i could be even more pretentious, but i can't. none of us can, that's why we don't. we don't have time. but we sure have time to notice how we don't"
>>
"Calvin finds a dead bird."

Heathcliff-tier genius.
>>
>>77994249
If not a genius, a man of talent and integrity. He kept the syndicate from whoring out his creation like they did Garfield.

Im 45 and i still read the treasuries.
>>
>>77994973
>Bill Waterson
>Pretentious
That's like calling Bob Ross pretentious because he can paint better than you.
>>
>>77994249
I don't really think so.
He was definitely amazingly talented, but the things he said are the things that normal people think. They aren't profound, just well-presented. He's a good artist and writer.
Like you don't have to be a genius to realize that life is pointless and fragile and that we have to kind of ignore that in order to carry out our daily functions, but he says and draws it better than I ever could.
He's also just an admirable guy with all that merchandising stuff. He seems like a guy who really cares, and that's nice.
>>
>>77994249
How is it that a kid who's a selfish and vile asshole can suddenly be insightful and empathetic?
>>
>>77995099
The intellectually handicapped from /co/ loves the word pretentious, but they could never grasp at it's definition.
>>
Calvin and Hobbes is definitely one of the best comics ever conceived.
>>
>>77994249
>Is Bill Watterson a genius?

Almost certainly.
>>
Watterson is a witch. His social commentary from twenty years ago perfectly fits modern society. No wonder the man quit and became a hermit.
>>
>>77995370
Have you ever interacted with kids, or were one?

Swear to god, the base state for most kids is asshole, with moments of clarity.

To be fair, I'd always be looking out for number one if my life was like this as a kid too.
>>
>>77995370
Because that's what actual people are like
>>
>>77995581
The only bad things in that stripes are the bullying part and maybe the teacher scolding him.
>>
>>77996100
The point is that he has no time to be free without people telling him what to do.

4chan better not even exist in twenty years.
>>
>>77994973
You sound cool and not under the age of 20
>>
>>77996812
It's not such a bad place, if you can avoid the @$$holes
>>
>>77996659
>According to sources, Watterson also spends a portion of his time calling comic strip syndicates to discuss publishing new material, only to abruptly announce, "Actually, that's never gonna happen," and hang up the phone.
>>
>>77998841
But the porn is one of the reason I come here.
>>
I do understand that people get sick of the adulation Calvin and Hobbes gets, but keep in mind thoughtful (but not preachy) comics like this one, about death, appeared alongside utter crap like The Family Circus and The Lockhorns. All things considered, it's a miracle it ever got published at all.

How ironic.
>>
>>77998990
Man, Calvin's mom is a total MILF.
>>
>>77994973
>wtf is he even saying
That life doesn't make sense even when you are an adult.
>>
>>78000765
this comeback makes zero sense whatsoever
>>
>>78001663
It wasn't a comeback, it was a comment about the use of pretentious for something other than what it actually means, a form of irony.

It's a joke. A jest. A rib-tickler.
>>
>>77999105
I've... never seen this one before. Which collection is it in?
>>
>>78002003
It's a comic that wasn't reprinted due to some backlash... Or so I've heard.
>>
>>78002473
Wouldn't surprise me. I've heard how many letters cartoonists can get for the stupidest reasons.
>>
>>78002473

Why can't people just understand that thinning of the herds is necessary to prevent starvation?
>>
>>77999105
amazingly vivid without blood. Very tasteful
>>
>>77996812
I won't live to 45.
>>
>>77995370
Kids are selfish pricks. Its why the job of parents is to make them stop being selfish and become productive members of society.

I think Bill described in one of his interviews that Calvin would grow up to be the artistic type which lines up with how he acts.
>>
>>77994249
>that paneling
>re-reading Calvin's use of "you" after he looks directly at the reader in panel 6
Absolutely.
>>
>>77999105
>Your kid writing this these days would result in him being doped up out of his mind and child services being called.

Bill was right, fuck society.
>>
>>77994249
Yes, and I'm ashamed at how mad and autistic I get when people imply otherwise, online and in real life.
>>
>>78003105

Maybe if you're lucky he'll just get suspended from school for half a year
>>
>>78003105
It's more sinister than that, because, legally, they can't administer without your consent.
But what they can do, legally, is expulsion, and threaten to expel. So conform, little boys and girls, or else they won't teach you how to conform even more!
>>
Since C&H is GOAT and his only real stuff so going from it I think you have to call him one. More than natural? genius I think Watterson was just a great craftsman and cartoonist.

If that's true he is a greater troll than JV.

From JV
>Making people who want sketches draw what they want me to draw first. Keeps it fun for me, and stressful for them!
>>
>>78003149
I can absolutely confirm this, and it goes on to the college level.

We had an incident like that at my university. A girl tried to kill herself (legitimate attempt, hospitalization required for her internal injuries) while dorming on campus, and they threatened to expel her unless she visited the campus psychiatrist.
>>
>>78000801
I was thinking, anyone drawn in those simplistic styles looks fuckable unless they are intentionally made ugly. Maybe we just fill the information lacking and surprisingly we are pretty optimist.
>>
>>78004783
Oh, the post hitler was quoting was from theonion. Nevermind,
>>
>>77999105
I distinctly remember that comic, so it must have been reprinted in at least one collection.
I'd check, but the collections are all at my parents' house.
>>
>>78004503
His paintings are amateur. Old ladies who took painting lessons in their retirement years paint like Bob Ross.

His skill is knowing the gimmicks to make mediocre paintings quickly, and he's got a really nice soothing voice. I love Bob Ross, but let's call a spade a spade.
>>
>>78004783
Man, that sounds like a fun game.
>>
>>78004980
Never trust Hitler.
>>
>>78000801
I had such a crush on Calvin's mom when I read them as a kid.
>>
>>78000801
She's really cute, in that weird, average sort of way

The one where they went to the beach gave me weird feelings as a youngn
>>
>>78004891
>Girl is clearly mentally unwell
>College forces student to see someone trained to help people who are mentally unwell
And this is bad how?
>>
>>78002003
"The Days Are Just Packed" or "There's Treasure Everywhere" I think. I don't remember exactly, but it was one of the wider/shorter books.
>>
It's disappointing he has access to the internet and the ability that comes with it to make whatever content you want without having to deal with editors or rules, something he worked his whole life to get, and he doesn't take advantage of it.
>>
>>78003149
When i was 12 i beat the shit out of a guy who had harassed me for the past 3 years.Teachers told me i had to apologies to the guy but i refused. Dad was so proud of me for standing up for myself that he bought me a new vidya.
Thank you, dad.
>>
Yeah the guy's a genius. I don't really care for C&H but I can't deny that it's pure quality and its impact cannot be overstated.

The rest of my thoughts on this matter would basically amount to shitposting and I'd rather keep it classy and show some respect to a great artist.
>>
>>78005632
This is true. His show wasn't called "The Joy of Painting" for nothing. His goal was never to create a technical masterpiece, it was to make something and enjoy doing it. It was closer to meditation than it was painting lessons.

You might be surprised. I never used to think I'd live past 40. I'm 47 now.
>>
>>77994973
He's saying that people are incredibly fragile and any day you could die from a myriad of ways like a car crash, cancer, heart attack, being murdered, etc. Same goes for everyone you know or care about. And even then it'll happen eventually and you're entire existence and thoughts will disappear forever when you die.
But keeping these things in mind 24/7 would be paralyzing and people wouldn't be able to function or do anything without crying in the corner about the imminent death of their minds and anyone else so people put it away and don't think about it and act like nothing is wrong.
