I think the closest analogy I can make for this series is it's Star Wars as a "Difficult Man" cable drama. All these scenes with Thanoth work off the same tension that was present in sections of Breaking Bad, Mad Men and The Sopranos where our anti-hero tries to manage and conceal his various deceptions and compartmentalize his dealings.

In TESB Vader already knew full well that Luke was his son long before he and Sheev had their little chat.
The thing with Vader is he considers his past self to be dead, but Luke is still his son, so in front of the Emperor he'll play up the "my past self is dead" and say Luke is Anakin's kid rather than "my" kid to make the Emperor think he's still loyal.
He also acts surprised, but it was pretty clear he wasn't during that chat in TESB, otherwise he'd have been far angrier in that scene.
It's basically sith games where they all know everything but pretend they know nothing until one of them says something.

Lots of great callbacks to the PT. It effortlessly weaves in explanation for seeming discrepancies (the context he creates for the ESB scene with Vader and Sheev actually makes that moment sing in a whole different way) and his OC's and concepts nicely marry original trilogy and prequel trilogy designs/sensiblities. See the Akbar-Grievous mash-up, for example.
Moreover, I would argue that the Vader of his first six issues feels closer to the demonstrative and extroverted zealot of A New Hope while after the Luke revelation in issue 6, he goes cold and laser focused, like the robotic, unstoppable force of nature that is Vader in Ep 5.
