/co/, you've made your opinions on Homestuck abundantly clear. But what do you think of Problem Sleuth?

i thought it was alright for what it was
>>
problem sleuth is great. not too long, entertaining, and everything paid off in the end. generally a satisfying read.
>>
>>77929076
This

The main problem with Homestuck is that it took everything that made Problem Sleuth fun and did it in way too excessive amounts and then threw in a bunch of bullshit on top of it.

But PS itself was a good balance of silliness and needlessly complex bullshit

>>
>>77929009

I think the biggest reason PS ended up being way better than homestuck is because it featured characters that were largely caricatures.

This allowed Huss to focus on the story without worrying much about characterization getting in the way.
>>
>>77929076
>not too long
I don't understand this.
>entertaining
Sure. But not enough to keep me interested through the end. yet I did get to it. Still, it always has BARELY enough steam to keep the reader going.
>everything paid off in the end
I'm not sure.

The boss battle 300 panels long was really, really, really exhausting, and by the end of it I had forgotten many of the one-joke characters that reappeared.

I tried Homestuck, but it seemed the same.

>What's behind the door?
>100 panels later
>IT'S A LITTLE JOKE! Hey another door!

Oh lord.

I binged it all in one go by the way, because the first time I lost my "progress" halfway through and I was scared it would happen again. Maybe that's why I couldn't enjoy it.
Maybe that's not the way to read it.

The earlier stuff, with the room and the pumpkin, and that adventure in the swamp thing, THOSE are actually nice and have a not-insane length. I liked those.

Problem Sleuth cannot be considered "concise", "short and sweet". I won't allow it.
Even if Homestuck is a lumbering behemoth of chaos in comparison.

it's notable for realizing his vision for the series instead of making convoluted end game decisions based on baffling current-moment goals.

all through ps it seemed like he was telling the same story. i think he thrives on the audience input format. it wouldn't work anymore due to regular controversies about somebody else's comic.

the characters were clear and made sense. i think he should come up with a bunch of jokes and rethink his characterization for his next work. he started constantly re-deciding they're a joke, important, serious, or alarming, so the story started falling flat.

Adding to, Jobs (i guess) once said of the iPhone if people were asked years ago a good (yet to be invented) way for traveling most could say about a flying car or a better airship when none would think a plane could be more convenient, because they don't think outside the box and neither knew what a plane was before existing (and 6 iPhone versions were created after your death, jokes on you!).
The influence from readers somehow reflect this; as trolls were introduced the comic attracted people with shallow potential to add something cool to story if given control (a reason PSX books didn't sell well), and fanventures/SBURB fanfics are now not more relevant than "davekat headcannon fic" or "meteor crew throwing garbage at jack noir in a printed page". If Homestuck could be once a plane of how webcomics are done right, by the last years it looks a 812424 words-long flying car.

I love problem sleuth and i fucking hate HS. My guess is that Hussie saw that PS had all this crazy randomness that ultimately came together and then he tried to capture that. HS doesnt feel random, it just feels like an awful clusterfuck Like, deliberately designed to be fucktarded. Maybe its nostalgia, but because PS had such a normal premise that got so crazy it made me feel invested. When PS got frustrated at bullshit you also got mad. Hs just starts out with dimension hopping intentional confusion. No Hussie, I am getting off the bus. The first ride was great but that doesnt mean Im buying a ticket to tumblrville.

I don't know which country hes from but there's crazy death taxes in the US, I'd imagine it's similar elsewhere. If he couldn't afford to pay the government the taxes on the inheritance they take it. I'd imagine a patent like that would be valued at quite a lot.

By no means am I going to say that isn't a valid complaint, but it is that way by design. I'm honestly too lazy to dig up a link of a copy of his deleted formspring, but I know Hussie once said Homestuck was intentionally complex with stable time loops and nonlinear story progression because where as PS was a story about a puzzle, the original goal with HS was a story that was a puzzle. Where that stopped being the main goal is up to interpretation.

The mystery of when we can get off Mr Hussie's Wild Ride

Honestly though, I agree. The Alpha kids were planned from the start, though I don't know how much of their story was planned back then. I'm certain Calliope and and Caliborn were imagined way back when as well, at least conceptually. Everything else about Act 6 has felt like it's a shift from what Hussie was teasing us with all those years ago on formspring.
>>
>>77935421
I'm not sure how that's where you got lost. It's usually when the story starts jumping around in time three acts in that loses people, but you somehow got lost from "He wants to play a game" to "the setting is now the game he's playing."
>>
>>77935486
Yeah, looking back a second set of kids were probably planned from fairly early on, Calliope and Caliborn seemed to be a later addition though, but I get the feeling that Hussie always wanted *Something* seriously evil for Lil'Cal to be involved in
>>
>>77935486
>The Alpha kids were planned from the start
I doubt that, I think that idea started when Hussie came up with the Trolls and ectobiology. Though Act 3/4 is kinda part of the start at this point.
>>
>>77935539
No, I can tell you that I got disengaged from the story just about when the mermaid troll got introduced. Being lost is part of the ride. I just didnt give a shit about the setting or the characters.

the first allusion to calliope and caliborn is when a puppet is shredded in a blender by dave and you see it be bright red and green pieces

>>
>>77935543
I say Calliope and Caliborn being planned much earlier because their are tied together through symbolic theme of Ophiuchus. I can't say for certain, but I'm pretty sure I remember Hussie claiming that a 13th troll/character representing the unofficial 13th zodiac is accounted for, back in early 2011.

>>
>>77935830
I was already getting pretty disinterested by the time the first trolls got introduced. It was like a peak into the void of the universe. I saw these kids and realized "These are going to be the secondary main characters who will probably end up having more depth than the human ones. Their alien-ness will give way to all sorts of wacky shit, and they themselves will have counterparts. One of them is probably a tiem traveler and all he while the human characters will become more like them" I dont know if any of that is true, but Im willing to bet Im closer to the truth than I care to know.
>>
>>77935887
For a long time the idea was that the trolls were nothing like humans, their culture and ideals really weren't compatible but they could work together, and the kids ending up troll-like was a bad thing.
Now that's all out the window and everyone is gay.

Hussie probably considers all the Dave and Karkat teasing, as well as the John and Terezi interaction, to be amusing to him, I just don't consider any of it is actually going be endgame material. It's an expected result of being immortal and being sexually frustrated young adults. They've even already got the makings of a pantheon and a divine family, with bizarre origins and relations via ectobiology and shit. I don't think they'd be as dickish to mortals as Zeus and other polytheistic gods were, but they could potentially be the most incestuous.
>>
>>77936634
>two characters who had good dynamics as friends suddenly becomes a really banal and developmentally stagnant couple, that'll still be super popular within the fandom.
Rose and kanaya really didn't have the best dynamics as just friends. Kanata wanted to bang her the whole time and rose was just using her to get information to help her rampage. Then she died and saw Kanaya and realized how gay she was. Compared to Dave and karat who did have a good friendship that turned into gay. Rose and kanayas never had that great a friendship because even though it took 2 years it was obvious that they were gonna get together when rose begged her to stay on the meteor.
>>
>>77939834
I guess that's true, but that does make their popularity within the fandom even more inexplicable, like what is there to be invested in then? It's not like their interactions got much more focus after they got together.

A question about Homestuck.
I read part of it years back and very early on I started skimming all the text because it seemed as if it was completely nonsensical and I wasn't actually meant to be read.

Was I wrong in thinking this?
>>
>>77946500
Yes, text is the most important part of it
Youll start seeing things without context because you skipped the text
>>
>>77946500
The narration and conversations are very relevant to the story, even when they seem not to be. If you read carefully, but things still don't make sense, it's likely they'll make sense later.

Well, if the first game comes out and proves to be decent, they might actually earn some money back.
It could also help them hire team members who could actually contribute to the project, instead of being the third concept artist or the assistant special effects coordinator or whatever kind of job a small indie studio with limited budget has no use for.

Seriously. Imagine going through the Gigapause with a little blue bar that filled a little each day.
Even if reaches 100% at one point and grow ten additional empty little blue bars, Problem Sleuth final battle style.

That's like the bare minimum when you can't be assed to keep in touch with your userbase. And it would have worked.

PS also remained driven purely by reader submissions too, where as early on, Homestuck was changed to be pushed forward by Hussie alone.

At least I'm pretty sure that's what happened.

>>77950432

>>
>>77949413

>>
>>77950432
>>77950463
You say that now, but consider Homestuck's eventual audience. Do you REALLY want the same people wetting themselves over Davekat to be making suggestions and driving the comic?
>>
>>77951579
When taking suggestions for Homestuck, Hussie always picked his favorite one from dozens to hundreds of posts.
One of the reason he's stopped taking suggestions is that, with so many people in the fanbase, he'd basically be able to find the exact suggestion to continue the story the way he had in mind, no matter what.
So a couple thousands inane suggestions from the worst fans wouldn't matter in the end. He'd always have hundreds of decent enough ones, and a couple to fit his plans to a T.
>>
>>77951579
you know that's more or less what happened anyway, right?

"Fuck the fandom ... You guys are cool though."

Wouldn't you just come to that same conclusion for any group savvy-enough to get in on some new sponsor-oriented thing?

The "us vs. them times" is so easy to manufacture: Patreon managed with any shred of control can be one of those things where the focus would never falter from the good times you're having there and then, not the awkward memories of gray-faced kids.

Ignoring the past in its totality is perfectly fine, in my little opinion, so long as the product is still arriving on time. It doesn't much matter what the product is, either, from what I've gathered.

I’m so excited to meet even more incredibly lovable and unforgettable characters, to explore Alternia first hand, to see what Earth is like from the eyes of a troll, to see what mysteries about the Homestuck universe will be revealed and what new questions will arise, to solve humorously devious puzzles (which if they are anything like the puzzles in Myststuck, they will be so much fun), to delve into another incredible piece of Hussie’s work in the universe I love so much.

You know the weirdest thing about looking back at Homestuck? I know even with all my fondest nostalgia and and memories,I can never read it again or enjoy it the same way I did. Not with the same influence and impact, or appreciate how radical and groundbreaking it was at the time. It's changed the landscape of the web in very influential ways and it's effects are so pronounced, that it's very contours that produced those changes are now unrecognizable. I won't be able to read and appreciate it like I did now because it accomplished everything it set out to and now other artists, like Kaz, Michelle and numerous others have taken, improved and rendered it's influence indivisible to it's own narrative.

It's basically the Seinfeld effect applied to Webcomics. Same with series like HEROS or LOST, when HEROS returned as a reboot it was already dead in the water because what it did for tv had sort of put it television lightyears ahead of itself and it couldn't measure up to what it stared.

I figured out once the original Ace Dick is actually Fiesta Ace Dick, since he was the one that woke up in the pentagram room and found out how to make the hot sauce.

Fiesta Ace Dick was so important to my IRL friend group that, anytime someone got rowdy or feisty about something, we could attach Fiesta to their name to denote concern.

Three dicks in 1 comic seems like too good of a deal to be true, so I am going with Ace Dick; the importance of the other four is palpable but not as touchably-soft.

Too bad over the summer the fandom harassed her to the point and not enjoying drawing Homestuck anymore. Now she just does it to provide content for her blog, but it's obvious by the quality that she's not as into it as other things.

Fans are so entitled now. They think they are entitled to whatever content they deem appropriate and can fling shit to whomever doesn't provide it for them.
