Biologically, I always figured it wasn't a person until it got a heartbeat. I don't know about banter, but maybe I can illuminate you further, if only to understand the viewpoint.
Basically, Protestants/evangelicals believe that the purpose of life is to get to know God, believe in Jesus, and spread that message to as many people as they can. They call a person's lifespan their "time of grace" that God has given them, since that stretch of time is when they can be redeemed.
If this time is cut short in any fashion--be it murder, suicide, abortion, whatever--it's not just a physical but a spiritual tragedy as well. (Granted, there are moral laws of self-defense outlined in the Bible.)
Tying into this, as part of the 4th commandment God gives the government the authority to cut this time of grace short--on the people who by their actions are basically broadcasting their intent to go to hell. This is why Christians support the death penalty and why Christians can in good conscience be in the army.

Protestantism in general has a variety of subgroups and synods though, that have varying levels of conservatism/liberalism.
What you described is more liberal, true.
Conservative Protestants adhere much more to the Bible, and are very against abortion as one example. Lutheranism is one of the larger categories of Protestantism, and synods range from the liberal ELCA to the conservative WELS (my synod)
It's surprising how many people don't realize Protestants are monolithic. There are people out there who even don't know the difference between Protestants and Catholics, so there you go.

When you get down to it. Europe learned the harsh lesson about industry and war that America learned with our civil war. The lesson?
