I'm enjoying the character drama way more then the fight scenes. It's corny but in that 90's Lois&Clark way that I can get into, and it's nice to have a cape show where everyone is generally pretty happy and pleasant to each other.

Well see, Superman canon, and by extension Supergirl canon, is very well established. With any other hero you can say "here's some parallel dimension where they're black or Jewish." With the super family you know which specific dimension.
So James Olsen is from earth 23, but the rest of the cast is not. This means that Superman had to have kidnapped him from another dimension to manipulate his Kara. Superman is a dick and the villain, but the show is too dumb to notice.
