In my opinion, the Hunchback of Notre Dame is the closest any animated movie has come to perfection (slightly tainted by the FUCKING gargoyles) in terms of my tastes as an adult. Esmeralda is one of my favorite animated movie characters of all time.
>>
>>77843952
Seriously? Apart from Pocahontas, it is hands down the WORST Disney movie of the last three decades. There's exactly one good song, and everything else is a ham-handed mess.

Maybe art design looks better, don't think animation does and when it does it's in works inspired highly by western animation: Miyazaki, Yuasa, Takahata, Otomo or Koike. Plus some animators really stand out like Mitsuo Iso.

I wouldn't call these the best but for the past few days I've been watching this series and I just finished the third one a couple hours ago so right now for me would be the first one out of the series with the second one a few feet behind, the third was meh but I liked the mom origin story. I like other animated films but I guess right now I'm filled with childhood nostalgia because I keep playing the songs in my head causing me to like it more plus Ariel is kind of hot in the first film even if she is "16" to me she looks like early 20s. Btw I'm a guy and I have no shame about watching them... maybe a tidbit.

It's not wrong, per se, since they both get the same point across, But with the Creativity example its more of the idea of art reflecting life, rather art reflecting art, if that makes sense.

And that just leads to the question of when referencing becomes cliche/plagarism/whatever.

Feel free to add more or debate on these. The aim is to find stuff that really has more adult/mature themes, not just having enough gore/nudity/swearing that it's not for kids. Think more Watchmen this is just an example than Johnny the Homicidal Maniac.

At the outset, I'd argue that we can put in some fantasy stuff as long as it sticks to this. Also, I'm including some anime because I don't think many /a/spies would be interested in this sort of thing.
This kind of list is mostly so adults know this kind of animation exists, and it treats adults like a mature audience that can handle what's there. Granted, they don't have to be rated R, but rated R is a helpful indicator.

Animated Movies:

A Scanner Darkly
Aeon Flux
AKIRA?
American Pop
Anomalisa
Appleseed?
The Congress
Chico and Rita
Fantastic Planet
Grave of the Fireflies or Barefoot Gen
GiTS?
Heavy Traffic
It's Such a Beautiful Day
Millennium Actress
My Dog Tulip
Paprika
Perfect Blue
Perseopolis
Pink Floyd's The Wall
Princess Mononoke
Rock and Rule?
The Suicide Shop?
Tokyo Godfathers
The Triplets of Belleville?
Waltz with Bashir
When the Wind Blows
Wrinkles

Animated TV Series (even harder to find than movies IMO):

Afro Samurai?
Berserk?
The Boondocks?
Bojack Horseman?
Moral Orel
The Maxx
Spawn (I'm including these purely by virtue of the fact that they're the only animated cape series I can think of that even are aimed mostly at adults)
Stressed Eric?
The Life and Times of Tim
Neon Genesis Evangelion (Like it or not, it's the Watchmen of mecha series. I mean this in both its maturity level, popularity, and polarizing opinions/interpretations.)

>>
>>77851026
Godly taste anon!
I wish Galactic Railroad got more recognition.
>>
>>77863446
The infographic isn't for underrated animation, though. It's for animation that tells a mature story, meaning one that explores issues that adults face in a meaningful way.

Again, gore, profanity, and tits do not a mature story make.

>>77863490
/a/ has a mature/seinen rec list??
>>
>>77855228

There is a lot of shit taste in this thread.

For anyone who hasn't seen The Tale of the Princess Kaguya, it comes to mind as the only 10/10 fucking masterpiece in recent years. There is a lot of terrible anime out there but when they get it right, they get it so fucking right.

>>77863589
Not defending the Beowulf film, because it was terrible, but the story of Beowulf which WAS reasonably translated to the film, is a mature one. It is a story of conquering and succession and the rights of a king and how the downfall of man stems from his own actions and hubris. These aren't really family themes.
