Coco and Yatsu are very powerful, but seemingly slow fighters. Coco's minigun can be devastating against big and/or slow targets, but is much less effective in close combat and against fast targets, which we saw when Mercury got close to her. Yatsu's weapon has long reach and power, but is also not very ideal up close.
Emerald and Mercury were great counters, because they are a pair of fast and mobile blitzers. Coco and Yatsu can definitely kill far more Grimm than Emerald and Mercury can.

I didn't see the new ep yet.
However Coco is like a support gunner person. Lots of firepower, but not a lot of maneuverability. So when a highly maneuverable guy like Shotgun Legs, I don't know his name, gets in close, Coco is at a serious disadvantage.
You can see this in several other things, off the top of my head, in World of Tanks, a Tank Destroyer is going to have difficulty taking down a Light Tank. The LT is just going to circle strafe the TD, while the TD doesn't have the turret or hull traverse to match the LTs speed. Despite the TDs gun being more than enough to one-shot the Light Tank, it's just too fast for the TD to bring its gun to bear accurately.

I think Coco's thing is that she's powerful but not skilled. She can shoot a giant thing from the sky, but doesn't have the skill to track a small, fast-moving target. Add the fact that Yatsu's a fucking tank and they never had a chance. Fox would have been a more effective partner, they definitely needed someone with more maneuverability/reaction speed

Anyway, yeah, Coco seems like a poor choice to put forward in the tournament. Lots of potential damage output, but mobility seems more important in hunter vs hunter fights. It could be that Coco wanted to move on while Fox and Velvet just didn't want it that much. Velvet seems meek and I'm not sure she'd want the spotlight or to go up against Coco if she were excited for it.

We had a few close calls with Qrow, but thanks to a timely smoke from Blake and his own medkit he made it out just fine. The real MVP here was Winter, she landed several <50% Overwatch hits with her Marksman's rifle to take out ET's attempting to flank Tuckson during his mad dash for the meld.

Outsider got completely wrecked by Ruby and Neo, while Velvet and Port drew the attention of the other pods, Neo just Sprinted to point-blank range with the Outsider and one-shot it.
Port did suprisingly well, he took out two drones flanking Velvet and tanked an Overwatch round so she could escape.Nobody bullies the bun on his watch.
Ruby just stone-cold executed the last ET after Velvet and co spent an entire turn taking potshots at it.
