Honestly most of these were changes for the better imo.

bait in particular I vastly prefer. It sticks to the original fishing metaphor without getting as warped as trolling did, and the images have much greater creativity and humor to them.

Though I could definitely see bantz/banter getting old real fast. Salty too, to a lesser extent.

The problem was normies coming in and abusing our culture and stealing everything we had held sacred. We understood that jokes and image macros were meant to be used sparingly and were not meant to cross the streams. Like rage comics. They were designed to have one face at the end with original drawn faces throughout the comic beforehand, thus marking the contrast between stylized expressions and intensifying the joke.

Then along came reddit and tumblr and 9gag, throwing memes and jokes where they didn't belong, saturating them and removing what good came of them. Now every panel of a rage comic had to have a funny super-detailed face, and the last panel no longer had impact.

I remember those days before. I remember, and it brings me memories, both pleasant and unpleasant.

What I really hate is that I can say this about /co/. I could accept it when /v/ kept getting worse, and I don't mind not going to /vp/ as much as I used to, but /co/ was always the fun board with something going on and generally minimal off-brand shitposting. I think it has less to do with boards infecting other boards and more to do with the demographical changes this site as a whole has gone through over the past five or so years. I think I started browsing sometime in '07 and it's changed quite a bit. I'm not saying it was a utopia or something back then, but it was definitely a lot more... habitable, shall we say. You didn't have nearly as many false flagging shitposting, boards trying to out-dank meme each other, normalfags, shills, etc.

Really the main cause of 4chan's drop in "quality", if you wanna call it that, is the fact that it got too popular for its own good.

>muh sekrit club

I mean, sure, you can throw that at me, yeah. But you know, clubs exist for a reason. They're a place to get away from the masses. A place with its own atmosphere and life. Before the internet you had bars and speakeasies, places where if they became too overcrowded with outsiders you'd dilute what made them great in the first place. When that happens, it becomes just another public place, removing anything that made it special in the process.

Look, don't misunderstand what I'm saying. I don't propose we build a wall and keep newfags out or try to remove the cancer that infects this place. I believe the changes we went through were inevitable. I suppose it happens to anything, given time. But saying the changes in this site can be blamed on a few boards is just silly. Boards raided other boards since the beginning of this site, and it never damaged things like it does now. No, the problem runs much deeper than that, and I don't think it's one you can fix. It's like nature, you can't fight it, you just have to accept it and try to adapt.

Or not. I'm sure there are plenty of better things I can be doing with my life right now. I just can't think of any. I'm probably never leaving this shithole of a site.

I do personally think the rise of Generals, particularly the perpetually renewing ones, hasn't helped with that. Instead of one board where everyone has to rub along, while getting exposed to new ideas, developing pre-existing ones and pressuring the worst posters to change, there there's lots of little, tribal communities that don't interact with one another much and that almost inevitably fester. Terrible posters can become integral parts of these mini communities much more easily and just make them more like themselves, attracting more awful posters.

But this
>Boards raided other boards since the beginning of this site, and it never damaged things like it does now.

I believe the issue not about 4chan being or not being a 'muh sekrit klub no gurls alloud' place but losing its more hermetic aspects. Back in the time 4chan was seen as a very weird and almost alien site not just because of it's unwelcoming, borderline hostile website filled with antisocial nerds at perpetual war with each other, but also because the interface and "culture" were quite different from other sites, like phpBB forums or similar.

Any newcomer would be at a loss with things like sage, age, tripcodes, macros, triforce, etc. Even the lingo would be a problem - everyone calling each other -fags, moot, CP, 'b&', 'v&'. It was hermetic; even if you knew about 4chan, entering was like going into a building were everyone spoke in code and handled their weird little rituals, and no one would explain things to you or show you the ropes.

But then the internet went even more mainstream over these few years and then 4chan even got its native extension and sage died and - much as I may hate to use the following term - things turned casual. Why, I still remember when Adblock was new and regarded as the seventh world wonder.

>bait in particular I vastly prefer. It sticks to the original fishing metaphor without getting as warped as trolling did

This. It also makes efforts to point it out much more effective.

When you think "troll" refers to the monster and use it as such, then you're not demonizing the post- you're attacking the character of the poster. Everyone rushes in with a response so they can get their witty retort/insult/threat, and in the end, the "troll" gets more attention.

However, when you point out that their post was "bait", then it puts the onus on the rest of the posters to not respond, lest they fall for the bait.

TL;DR: Calling a post "bait" shuts down responses to shitposting more effectively than calling the poster a "troll".

Oh jesus, I used to love going to /v/. It used to be such a fun place. I would never say it was good, but it used to be not as bad. Now it's just negativity all the time, drama and gamergate and tumblr boogeymen and antisemitism, and you're a shill if you like anything. It's just a depressing board to visit.

>There used to be a lot more agreement between the sides; bills proposed by one party could still pass because a sizable amount of the other sided with it. The divide only grew larger, to the point where it seems people disagree out of principle.

Sometimes. There were eras in US politics where fist fights, gunshots, and duels to the death would occur between politicians in Washington.

It's true- we are undergoing an era of intense partisanship that most people in this and the previous generation have never seen before.

However, it's a stretch to act like this is some kind of anomaly or abnormal state of affairs in US history.

It does because attacking a blatant troll is generally seen as more acceptable than falling for obvious bait. Lots of people on internet message forums pride themselves on confronting self-proclaimed trolls. Harder to make yourself feel self-important about confronting to obvious "bait".

It used to be that you didn't have to. /b/ was pretty much the only place you saw people spamming nigger and the like, and if you tried that shit on other boards, they would ban you or dismiss it with "go back to /b/".

But then 4chan got really popular and people started equating it with /b/ to the point where they thought /b/ related crap was a thing on every board.

Even worse was when it started attracting legitimately racist/sexist/anti-Semitic assholes who saw 4chan as some sort of haven in opposition to other internet communities where their shit would get them permabanned.

Of course they were here. They're at your school and your family, and at your workplace, and even among your friends.

But there's a difference between them being there and them thinking that they've finally found a place where they are free to be jerks and telling all their other openly asshole friends to come and join in on the fun to the point where you can't even discuss a movie trailer without them spouting off a half dozen racist remarks.

/frz/ is something I never understood either. What was there to discuss? It was just a well animated film (despite Elsa's hair clipping) with some good songs . No new content to discuss aside from that, nothing. If I remember correctly, that lack of content was the one that killed /frz/, and it was banned more or less at the same time of /hsg/.

/sug/ and /mlpg/ on the other hand, are based around active and "alive" franchises or series. There is new content to discuss every week, unless there is a hiatus in wich case shitposting of many types is assured. That's the main reason why /sug/ is banned ritght now.

I used to browse /hsg/ for the art and for the rare occassions in which the comic was actually the center of the discussion (instead of Vriska's tits, for example). From what I could understand, the fact that those threads were so fast paced and the intra-reporting of posts drove the mods/janitors crazy, so they ended up banning the generals. Let's also keep in mind that Homestuck suffered from long hiatuses that were more and more common and long with the passing of time (we are having one right now), leading to the insane amount of shitposting I commented previously. I miss those days, though

>Please explain what the difference between Pool's Closed, Muh Dick, and Le Happy Merchant is, please.

"Pool's Closed" started because people on 4chan heard that Habbo Hotel guys were discriminating against brown characters, so they thought it would be funny to make a bunch of black characters to go in and obstruct the game. And it pretty much stayed in /b/. And nobody ever used "Pool's closed" as an insult to someone else on 4chan. The joke wasn't on black people. It was on the people at Habbo Hotel for being tools.

"Muh Dick" and "Happy Merchant" are taken from comics done by an honest to god racist white supremacist. They were picked up and used on 4chan pretty much exist for no other reason that to make fun of black and Jewish people. The joke is on black and Jewish people. Why? Because they're black and Jewish.

Isn't it because the stereotypes are mostly true? Their ethnicity has only as much to do with as the fact that they still do the actions that are attributed to their ethnicity.

They are self-enforcing, when people are being exposed to stereotypes about themselves, they try not to confrom to them so hard they fail and end up comfroting to them. Calling someone a nigger on 4chan is a bit different though because there's very few actual ways to prove the person you're insulting is black in the first place.

So it just becomes a generic catch all insult. Which is actually kind of nice. Fag is another example. We call drawfags drawfags. Are they actually gay? Who knows? Who cares? Are we even calling them fags out of hate anymore? Not really.

4chan takes the venom out of hate speech through sheer callous overuse. Whereas other places which need not be named have deified those same words. It's like in Harry Potter where they did that whole He Who Must Not Be Named thing and then someone goes "wait isn't that showing Voldemort way too much respect?"
>>
>>77802860
>Calling someone a nigger on 4chan is a bit different though because there's very few actual ways to prove the person you're insulting is black in the first place.

That was back when anonymous referred to other anonymous as nigger.

Nowadays on 4chan, the term is increasingly used to describe actual black people/characters as a means of getting SJWs and anyone who gives a shit all flustered. Nigger/kek shitposting plagues every Star Wars thread on /tv/ for instance.

Those people just saw people tossing around the word and figured, "Oh, it must be okay to be a racist asshat here" without actually understanding what was going on.

>I do personally think the rise of Generals, particularly the perpetually renewing ones, hasn't helped with that.

Actually I think it's the underlying cause of the Generals that's the root problem. That /v/-like mentality that anything that's popular at the time and disliked by a vocal minority needs to be quarantined elsewhere, so that "true" discussion can take place. We saw it before with /v/ and it's spinoffs. We saw it with MLP. It's still happening now with live-action adaptions, and even superheroes as a whole, although at a dramatically stalled rate.

Honestly I think generals are the closest we can ever come to a happy medium on this site.
>>
>>77807982
I admit, my experience is somewhat informed by /tg/ where its getting to the point that anything that isn't 40k or a quest is a general of some form that is usually perpetually renewing and with the same people posting over and over. At that point, why even bother with an imageboard? A traditional forum would be a more sensible way to discuss it

I also get that for more niche subjects a thread on something can become a de facto general as the people interested in it talk about different topics. I just think if you've got an idea, or tell a story or even just make a dumb joke you should feel able to share it with the whole board, and I think the impermanence of the image board format can be an advantage if its used to keep things fresh. Not everything needs to be a maxed out, here all the time mega topic, you know?

I know I'm also biased because the general for a game I like got colonised by creepy weirdos that I ended up having to get off the internet for the best part of a year to shake off, and I can't say any more because I don't need that shit in my life again. .

See >>77797884
>>
>>77808966
Fair enough. I think Generals are pretty useful, just for the sake of having a default thread to post FAQs and other things that don't really need a thread of their own. My homeboards are /co/ and /m/, and seeing people starting a new thread to ask the same questions ad nauseam can get old, you know? Plus I like the off-the-wall discussion that can pop up after a prolonged time, as long as it's not completely inane.

I totally understand your pain. I've never seen anything that traumatized me on a deep personal level, but I have seen my fair share of depravity. Being a Transformers and Steven Universe fan is funny that way.

I was never with it. I was counter culture since youth like some kind of unconscious edge lord. I was the literal concept of hipster but at least I was genuine in my angsty non-conformity rather than joining into a subculture so as to feel like part of a whole.
Same thing in politics. Left and right is a joke. If you 'belong' to either you're most likely a line toeing idiot. Things should never be boiled down to two opposing views. Politics is so varied and broad you should have an almost neutral average because you actually think and consider you opinion on each point with its context not just consulting your handy party guidelines.

>However, it's a stretch to act like this is some kind of anomaly or abnormal state of affairs in US history.
What about that statistic that says this congress has done the least amount of actual work in US history?

Nothing, it's "old" enough to be accepted but "new" enough to be annoying and fresh. So it's used. Kek really became a thing around 2013, I feel.

>Really the main cause of 4chan's drop in "quality", if you wanna call it that, is the fact that it got too popular for its own good.

We don't even produce good OC anymore since whenever someone starts something, it's BACK TO /R/4CHAN HURR HURR.

We're living off tumblr memes like desu sempai. It's depressing.

>Well, that's true. Have you seen the Anonymous documentary yet? Pretty informative and terrifying.

Is it epic meme exploding van or does the person know anything about the site?

No, wrong. There used to be image macros and memes and then people started using the word meme to refer to everything.

They can be what they want, doesn't change the fact that THEY were attacked and defended themselves after giving plenty of warning.
In the protesters' own words:

That hasn't changed at all. Back when it was called trolling people understood it the exact same way. The paradox is that people don't want to reply, but at the same time they want to make it known that they can see through the poster's intentions. So you get a stream of replies patting themselves on the back for not falling for it. This was true with trolls and it's still just as true with bait.

That's kinda true. And now they're redefining that IT to tell us we never were with IT to begin with, even though not being with IT was our IT.

Moon pie. What a time to be alive.

>Don't worry, we still get all the credit for Gamergate despite them doing it mostly on the shitty knockoff sites and it being banned here.

Wasn't the Fox report showing 420chan as well? This is not new. Most people don't know that there are multiple 4chan boards.

With video games, yes, I just don't get most modern video games. I see them as lacking heart and soul most of the time.

Honestly /co/ isn't in the complete gutter like the rest of the boards I used to go to I mean
/v/
>[insert buzzword here]
/x/
>Hey guys does Luigi board work? How to succubus?
/a/
>Hey guys what this is anime?
>Boku no pico, it shit, boku no pico, it shit

Honestly this board and /tg/ are the most browsable
Even /his/ is already being invaded by polfags
>>

Don't forget /tv/

>Interracial porn
>feet
>pedo threds
>Baneposting
>JEWS

All boards have declined in qualty, though. /m/ used to be a helpful place with minimal amounts of fun posting and now half of it is just dedicating shitposting over various Gundam series.

The only reason why /co/ is better than /v/ is that we have containment generals for the worst posters.
>>
>>77821876
/v/ has two entire containment boards tho
>>
>>77821943

Most of the worst ones fucked over to /vg/ though. Or /vp/

/vr/ is probably the last bastion of maturity on /v/
