What was he thinking? I mean, everyone had left already, I'm sure nobody would have died had it been a real grenade. He almost just died for no reason and probably would have left a few keks in his legacy.

Because you don't know how grenades work? Not saying he would have stopped any of the metal shrapnel, but it was a split second decision based off secondhand knowledge of how grenades actually kill people.

Also, he jumped over it before anybody ran away, that was the whole point.

He would have been honored for his sacrifice, even if it was ultimately useless. There was a British soldier who accidentally dropped his grenade trying to flank an enemy position and blew himself up, but he still got posthumous awards for his bravery.

Also, it was a split-second decision.

Nope
Pay attention. Doc wasn't going to let anyone he didn't trust have the real deal experiment, and a bunch of people who tried the backdoor special died anyway so no one would become Cap.

Also no sane organization throws live explosives out in the open when they need as many recruits as possible to survive the army of heavily equipped super nazis they have to fight.

That's what I'm saying, even the shrapnel isn't going to do a whole lot of damage with proper standoff distance. It can only cause injury at 50 feet or so and has a fatality range of 5 feet.

Really depends on the pineapple. Some affect only a short area and some are wide enough that when they tell you to hit the ground its so that its just easier to bury the body.

The mk2 commonly in use at that time no seriously I don't really care if it was a mk2 or something OSS cooked up, they're roughly comparable had a burst radius of 10 metres. That's slightly less powerful than the modern equivalent, but it's still likely to cause casualties of significance inside that zone.

Since Rogers knew his entire squad and several officers were within the zone, he also knew that using his body to dampen the initial blast would reduce, but not entirely preclude, the casualties.

For reference, once the pin is pulled the Mk2 has a 5-second fuse. Once you've actually seen it, it has a less than 5-second fuse. Assuming average reaction and audible warning times take at least one second to complete, that leaves *maybe* 3 seconds to cover a 10-metre distance in any direction away from the centre of the blast - being more than 10 metres away doesn't guarantee safety, either (dependant on where the grenade fell - if it fell in dirt or even better sand, it would be far less dangerous, but conversely it would be more dangerous if it were in the air (say if some idiot tried to throw it away) when it went off. The real danger from a grenade on the ground is that you have to get away from it in a short time without looking at where it is; difficult when you're potentially dealing with other bodies with slower reaction times or who maybe haven't heard the warning.

For an unarmoured body, even a single piece of shrapnel from a mk2 (which was cast-iron with an explosive core) could easily be lethal. Slowing that shrapnel at source by any means would do a great deal to reduce injuries to bystanders.

Having seen quite a few grenades detonate, and almost having cooked one on myself during basic, yeah the explosion isn't very large and the shrapnel most likely would have been contained by his body...unless his body joined said shrapnel. :D

You have never spoken to anyone who's ever served in the military, have you? Get the fuck out of your mothers basement.

Seriously you are one stupid, ignorant motherfucker: the military ENCOURAGES this sort of suicidal tentancy. Its a fucking game in basic/boot where the Sargent throws in socks and soda cans in the barracks, while screaming "GRENADE" and someone HAS to fucking leap on it before the Sarge says Boom. If they don't make it in time, the whole platoon is "dead" and gets chewed the fuck out.
>>
>>77776402
I didn't like this part because I loved getting Germans to jump on my grenades in Medal of Honor.
>>
>>77799693

>kick grenade
>sergeant says boom while grenade is in the air because the fuse length is whatever he chooses it to be

>>77799740
Because grenades aren't round balls that will go where you want them to they're shaped like ovals and if they're German they have weird handles. You're just as likely to kick it at your guys as you are at an empty space.

Jumping on the grenade more or less ensures that only one person will die.
>>
>>77799693
Never served in THOSE branches, no. The Air Force kinda likes you to stay alive, especially when everyone has a chance to get clear of the danger (which I THINK they did in tat scene...but the first modern Cap movie was boring as shit, so I had trouble keeping interest up).

And training is training. I have three uncles, all of whom are warrant officers. Their drills run this kind of situation CONSTANTLY. The most accurate part of the movie is when Steve jumps on the dummy grenade to stop it from hurting anyone else. That is what you re trained to do, if you haven't already dropped to the ground.
