As someone who grew up reading New Teen Titans when it originally ran, I would argue that competency does not make for a better character.
The Tammaran arcs were always dogshit and a chore to get through. And Blackfire was an unlikable bitch who never got over the fact that her parents liked Starfire more than her, because she was a sick child while Starfire was healthy.

She wasn't sick as much as 'crippled' in that she couldn't fly like other Tamaranians. Her jealousy of Kori made her a psycho bitch (a little bit of a Deathbird knock off as well I kinda thought). Unless it was implicitly stated later that he parents hated her it was all in her head.
