I like it. I was wondering what they were going to do with vol. 4, because vol. 3 ended with them running to board the ferry from the episode with the frogs, and after that episode there's not as much room to insert more little side plots. Plus I did want to see more of The Woodsman's backstory.

Might just describe how he's a man who thinks too much, and how the wild lands might be so frightening to him. Anna and his wife weren't so fearful, but this world was alien and suspicious to him, so it was easier for him to fall prey to the Beast.

The dog was Beatrice's and had swallowed one of the turtles and became evil. Seems like the turtles taint things, which is why I'm curious why Whispers can eat them with no ill effects.
I could see the Woodsman's wife just meeting a regular animal and his fear blew it out of proportion. The Beast doesn't need much effort to make fearful people into his servants.

I thought the Beast didn't have the power to harm people directly. How did he kill the Woodsman's daughter?

Seems like he didn't. The Woodsman's wife was hurt by an animal, infected, and died. Then the Beast used that fear to make the Woodsman afraid for this daughter. She returns home unharmed, but he's got a servant for life because the Woodsman thinks he's caring for her soul.
