It's a release date that puts them in position for Christmas toy sales. The timing was very intentional. Every character model in the film is designed to be turned into plastic. As for how you missed all the ads, you must have been living under a rock.

All of these kids in my art classes who say "i want to work for pixar and disney!" or "I got into animation/3d because of gibli and Disney" are the exact type of gullible and stupid people Disney takes advantage of, that's why wage fixing is still a thing when it comes to Dreamworks and especially Disney.
They are blinded by their nostalgia to actually look to other places and their wages. Honestly, doing credit and opening sequences pays more than working on an animated film yearly. I was glad my teachers also told me doing the Disney route was practically the flipping burgers of the industry.
You just have to be smart and look into you "dream" job closer before actually setting course towards it.
