No, if it had been said that It was valid to assume that, and just that, i wouldn't had gone out of my way to point out it was stupid. Changing the connotation of the arguments basically changes the whole point over which the argument held base. It is not the same to discuss if it was valid to claim that as a possibility as it is to discuss if the default answer is or not that it was a mistake on the writers.
Also, there is a huge crucial difference on your stupid example. The test is all about answering the questions. This a minor concept that has no real direct relation with the main plot nor does it has anything that can't be explained or that truly goes against the current canon. To just assume the authors committed a mistake, and that was the thing here not taking it as a valid answer, is not any better than assuming the answer is "X".
