It's a way to distract from a deficiency. Lizard tits, lesbianism and frog gams can attract readers to a property and keep them reading despite the writing being sub-par. It also helps create a venue: making exotic lizard pinups on its own would attract nothing but furries, but putting them in a webcomic gives the designs more exposure than they would have had otherwise.
