Mai was pretty damn happy to see Azula. Even Ty Lee seemed to like her - even admire her - 99% of the time. They were aware their friend was kind of teetering on the edge of insanity, but they were still friends.
Ty Lee seemed to think Azula would always stop just short of true evilness, whereas Mai appeared to just think that, as a friend and royalty, she wasn't going to be a target for her friend's sadism.
