Actually Liefeld has improved a ton in recent years. He's not really great or anything, he's about average and he's a nice guy anyway. I think most of the hate for him comes from people that don't really read a lot of comics but read some Top 10 list and suddenly just hate him and everything he does.

As said before, he just doesn't do good 'motion'. Sure, he can do great heroic poses, and your usual punches, or whatever. On the other hand, Ross sucks from panel to panel motion. Sequential stuff. It's stale. Also, all his characters have the same feeling to them. Much like Liefeld's.
