http://comicbook.com/2015/11/24/fantastic-four-sequel-removed-from-foxs-release-schedule/
>Despite Fox's initial insistence that the Fantastic Four sequel was moving forward despite the box office failure of the first film, Fox has now officially removed the Fantastic Four sequel from their release schedule.

>Fantastic Four 2 was originally scheduled for a June 9, 2017 release date, even before the first film hit theaters. With virtually all superhero movies performing well at the box office recently, Fox probably felt confident at the time that Fantastic Four would follow suit. However, Fantastic Four wound up being the rare superhero movie flop. Fantastic Four only grossed $56 million domestically and $167 million worldwide on a production budget of $120 million.

>It's unclear if Fox removing Fantastic Four 2 from their schedule means the film is indefinitely canceled or if it will be rescheduled for a later date to allow more time for Fox to plan a strategy for what comes next.

In local news, water remains wet.

Just once, just once, I'd like these studios to just admit they made a bad movie.

M8 this movie had a truly poisonous production history that everyone on the Internet knew about.

The last time a movie had this much public exposure of its production issues was, I don't know, The Lone Ranger? Ant-Man?

I went in expecting a huge turd and what I got wasn't even as bad as Iron Man 2.

Apart from just being kinda bland what provokes so much hate for this movie?

I almost think it could have been good if they'd amped up the horror aspects more.
>>
>>77678437
Because it fucks the mythos so hard its asshole is now in its throat.

it was also just an excuse for Trank to make Chronicle 2.
>>
>>77678422

Sure, I'm just saying the production issues were very public. Movie turned out pretty entertaining at least.

>>77678437

Because it's barely a movie. Fox cut so deep with the production the movie becomes 90 minutes of people sitting in rooms talking and watching the Saga Of Kate Mara's Wig. There's no character arcs or emotional resonance because it was all cut out in the editing room.

I'm not saying whatever Trank's original cut was would have been great, but it's at least a movie. I felt like Tranktastic was a collection of scenes where people talk in cramped rooms and then they get into the single worst superhero fight scene of the past 20 years, it's barely anything.

This. Not even Doom really, but the Skrulls, Galactus, and Annihilus would be much needed additions to the MCU.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think Kang might be under that umbrella too
>>
Fox will be okay because they have other stuff to rely on besides Fantastic Four, like X-Men.

Marvel will be okay because they've steadily been adapting to not working with Dr. Doom and any other FF-related character.

Trank will be okay when public memory fades and people forget how much of a douche/whiner/scapegoat he was. Or he'll quit movies forever.

I will not be okay because Kirby/Lee FF remains my all time favorite run of Marvel comics and I cry bitch tears erry day arr day b/c the Galactus Trilogy will never be done justice.
>>
>>77678265

>>77678595
???

He filmed that scene to showcase the ability of IMAX filmstock to other directors. He'd never have found the funding to do it any other way (IMAX is fantastically expensive compared to 35mm or digital, with negligible benefits to the finished product).

Apparently the six people he actually made it for viewed it and said "yeah, maybe, if I can convince the studio to spring for IMAX filmstock". Because even if Nolan were capable of making a normal length movie, he couldn't have afforded to do it with IMAX, and neither can anybody else.

I'm sure from a technical stand he's very satisfied with it, though it is of course garbage.

The reason he says "I'm CIA" instead of having a name is so they pay the actor less.
>>
>>77677968
Man, what breaking news. You mean we won't get anymore characters not interacting with each other, dark-as-fuck camera tint, awful effects, botched villains, and uncomfortable dialogue said by the heroes that sound like something villains would say?

Bummer.

Likewise there was several bits of concept art.

Trank's cut was reviewed by Fox and they hated it so much the lopped off the ending and added the cartoon slap fight.

According to Trank, and by looking how he acted in reports, it was supposed that the original film was a lot more coherent. What wound up happening was Fox saw what they'd greenlit and what Trank was doing, and instead of letting him finish his own product they paniced and mutilated his project, then they made him reshoot a bunch of scenes and he was just fucking miserable so he was just wrecking shit.

So basically Fox ruined what could've been a more interesting superhero movie, just to ape Marvel/disney and it failed spectacularly. Like a fucking supernova of shit.

They don't want to turn rights over to marvel despite two shitty f4 movies, Hugh Jackman wanting to be an avenger, and the x men movies without Magneto as bond being msotly shit.

You're right, i think they forcibly brought in some no-name to reshoot a ton because Trank was a mess at that point.

Didn't even have the decency to fault themselves they just blamed Trank.
>>
I've posted this a couple times but I waited on a few guys who worked on the reshoots of this movie, and ended up talking with them about it at length and got some funny anecdotes that haven't been covered by the media.

For example, at one point they were shooting a scene without Trank present, and somebody asked Kate Mara how she was doing. She responded "I'm good, I just need a director... and a script... and a better movie"

I don't even know how a comic franchise as campy as F4 manages to have a lot of god-tier villains when the protags are all shit and boring in comparison.

The MCU is in desperate need of some decent antagonists besides Loki and Kingpin. That is when they don't casually kill them off like they tend to do in the movies anyway....
>>
>>77679342

I'm not even talking about the Big Wig 4 U, the direction is flat and they all take place in these tiny enclosed rooms where it's just shot/reverse shot conversations.

Be honest. Did you want a Kronenberg horror movie Fantastic Four because you think it's a good idea, or because you hate Marvel Studios movies?
>>

I'm pretty sure it was a committee thing. One person shouldn't have been able to greenlight it, I feel like those jewbag cocksuckers were too busy counting thier shekels to give the thing a serious read over and just handwaved it in.

It's all speculation, but I think whoever greenlit it thought it'd be a neat tdkr type of flick but the execs panicked and figured it wouldn't sell.
It's like they think thier personal tastes and beliefs dictate the market. Maybe if they brought in a test audience they might've seen better results, and Trank wouldn't be so depressed.
>>
>>77679062
That would actually be a massive improvement to Reed's character in not just the movies but the comics as well.
>>
>>77679399
I'm trying to remember, it was a few months back.

Remember the rumors about Trank and his wife's dog wrecking a house that they were renting? Apparently they had a bunch of pills that the dog got into, and it later died at the vet. Trank is now trying to sue the vet.

And it wasn't even Trank or his wife that found the dog sick and brought it to the vet, it was some PA
>>
>>77679385
It was probably a disconnect between mid level guys and the upper level bean counters.

Trank was the right guy to hire. The Fantastic 4 name was in a terrible place even before the movie fucked it up.
Look at the Arrested Development plot mocking it six ways to Sunday.

They wanted to distance themselves from the campy cheesy past and have nothing new and interesting.
So they got a guy with an idea to make a more horror movie type interpretation.

But as things were going, the upper level guys were like "Horror movie crap? We want Avengers money! Make it more like the Avengers".

So now you have an executive order from someone who doesn't give a shit about anything other than money.

It was a good idea and it could have been good.
But, ironically, the MCU gave it an abortion.
>>
Fixing up a sequel with more comic booky F4 would have been easy if the movie had been any money whatsoever

Pretty easily. He's a complex character who's motives and backstory are very isolated from the hero's books he's spawned from so trying to tell both of their stories in the span of one movie will always end in awful shortcuts and imminent failure IMO.
>>
>>77679619

If you don't, you have to spend 15 minutes of your film setting up his origin story which is almost entirely disconnected from the rest of the narrative.

I get why fans are mad about why they do that, but it's just a cleaner story if everyone is there at the same time. They just haven't done it well yet.

Yeah they would, when you think marvle you think a grand adventure for the whole fucking family, they can turn shit into gold, and they can grease the right palms to make the movie seem bigger than it is.

People hear marvel got the rights back to the f4 they'd be adverse to it at first, but it'd be followed with "well at least Disney/marvel's got it!"

Popular "wisdom" holds that Tomorrowland bombing at the box office cause Disney to abandon Tron 3, but in reality it was probably so they can concentrate more on exploiting their shiny new Marvel and Star Wars licenses.
>>
>>77679838
>Didn't it do ok with critically and financially?

It didn't make ENOUGH money for the people at Disney. Plus after they acquired the MCU and SW they basically canned their own initiative to develop their own action franchises (like Tron, John Carter, Prince of Persia, etc).
>>

It didn't require new licences to make Disney drop this one.

I don't see what they were thinking.
If Fox wants a good Fantastic Four movie, why don't they put actual effort in it? I mean, they gave Trank the FF to do whatever he wanted with it because they didn't want Marvel to get the rights. Then they act surprised when he makes something they weren't expecting with the license? Then they ask Matthew Vaughn and edit the movie into some Frankenstein monster of a dark sci-Fi body horror and a funny superhero movie and are shocked when they don't mix?
If they wanted a FF movie done like the MCU, then they should of put effort into it and put the right director for their vision.
They need to put some effort into the FF franchise

>>
>>77682219
If you look at what happened in the last six years, they first announced a reboot in 2009 (when Marvel got bought out by Disney). So probably between 2009 and 2012, The Dark Knight success was something they wanted to attain. That probably would be why they agreed to Trank's direction and were considering Carnahan's 70's Daredevil.

But then the Avengers and GOTG were hits and Fox had people that wanted to go in that direction.

Rick and morty is an adventure show, not an action show. The problem with fantastic four movies so far is that they are trying to put action when it really doesn't need it.

They just need the incredibles with a space portal that sends them on rick and morty adventures.

>I'm not saying whatever Trank's original cut was would have been great, but it's at least a movie.

That depends though, we don't know for sure how much Trank filmed before they decided to "fire" him in October.

>>77679229
>>77679302
If you go by all the stuff that was being said on TigerDroppings and all that, the rumor was that Trank got fired back in October and reshoots were possibly done by Matthew Vaughn (which was a big rumor back in May till Trank denied it, but then someone on IMDB brought it up again near the release of the film, as seen here)

And then someone else claimed that Drew Goddard and some others got involved:

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/fantastic-four-blame-game-fox-814764

Trank was still there because if they fired him then they'd be forced to reshoot a larger number of scenes for a different director credit. So he might still have minimal advisement at most.

>Most of EW’s sources agree, with tiny variations, that this scene is what audiences were meant to see. But the reason it was only in the trailer, and not the finished film, is where opinions diverge.

>Those close to Fox say Trank was indecisive, and couldn’t figure out if he needed the scene, going back and forth before finally deciding it wasn’t necessary. They cite it as another example of a director out-of-control, unsure of what he wants or how to execute it.

>Others close to Trank say the filmmaker always wanted the sequence, but was forced to cut it when the studio pared back the budget at the start of production. They say Trank created a detailed previsualization of the scene – essentially, an animated version of what it should look like – that allows digital artists to begin creating effects.

>Late in production, when Fox executives realized they had a comic-book movie in dire need of action, sources sympathetic to Trank say they agreed to finance the scene – but Trank was not allowed to participate in the filming. As a result, the crew returned with footage shot in documentary hand-held style – which didn’t match the previsualization, or the planned digital effects, and also clashed with the visual style of the rest of the movie.

>At that point, according to sources close to Trank, the exasperated director chose to kill the scene entirely.

Batman had three hit movies and only one flop, and that still made a profit. Eight years of rehabilitation and they had a three billion trilogy on their hands.
