80s style is fucking stiff shit with no personality.
For that matter 90s style in OPs pic is bullshit. Look at how different every 90s nicktoon looks
Also while I admire his skill as an animator, I've never liked Harry's style.
For that matter 10 cartoons in that list do indeed look pretty bland since AT came out, except Gravity falls.
But AT at least had the charm of representing children sketches at the beginning of the series.
>>
Why did he use the pilot for Gravity Falls?

Because it has worse animation, and OP wants to prove his point with something that didn't even air on TV.

This >>77662627 , everything is just dumbed down, simpler, more accessible. Also it's easier to make, you need less illustrators and animators if everything is fat. And fatness is accepted social norm nowadays so you can get away with it while making more money.

So, to sum up:
> population is dumber
> population is fatter
> business needs to increase profits while lowering cost

I tend toward realism when drawing and I don't like Tumblr noses at all but I really prefer the more modern, simple models for cartoons. It's easier on the eyes when animated.

The old 90s stuff is more realistic and still frames look more interesting, but the animation in TV runs was usually pretty stiff compared to AT or OTGW, and regardless of muh Tumblr I feel like the style has legitimate charm when used by someone who knows what he's doing.

I also dislike cartoons made in that angular Hanna-Barbera look, it always struck me as lifeless with the exception of Samurai Jack because SJ had great artistic direction to compensate.
>>
>>77661997
>Thoughts?

Around the late 90's, Hannah Barbera stopped trying to imitate Disney/Comic Books and started going with more stylized characters. This made animation faster/cheaper/more consistent/accessible and even more reliant on writing and cinematography than on off-model takes and visual slapstick.
>>
>>77662783
Oh. I got it mixed up. It has decent animation imho and God tier art. That is what I meant. Also, the other shows you listed have pretty good animation too. I don't see why you're so angry. In your opinion, which animated show has the best art?
>>

The eyes are a bit too far apart in the 2010's one.

I agree there were trends, but that's also because all of those shows were outsourced to the same handful of studios, and that matters much more than people would like to admit. They'd all look alike because, just like Klasky Csupo, they were all drawn and animated by the same people overseas.

Nowadays, the common thread is flash/toonboom production. There are some things that those programs just do better, and that's guiding design. It's the tail wagging the dog.

>>
>>77664799
the show sucked but damn I forgot that the animators actually tried in that one despite most of the 2000s
>>
>>77663372

Wow, somewhere after the 80's and 90's, animation went to hell. My opinion, flash killed it. And because an entire generation of animators were brought up on flash as the "new medium" for animation, that lack the discipline older animators have for design and detail.
>>
>>77665248
>flash killed it
That's certainly part of it. Computers in general made animation quicker and easier at the expense of quality. Lowering the learning curve makes discipline less necessary, allowing projects to tolerate laziness more.
>>
>>77665248
>Implying that shit hasn't been outsourced to the cheapest Asians anyone can get on payroll for ages

Other than big wig movie studios, there aren't really animators making cartoons in America. Production crews for your average cartoon focus on the story, music, storyboards and writing, and voice acting rather than the pain in the ass that animation is. Flash just made their jobs easier, because of course they aren't going to painstakingly draw it by hand when there is an alternative.

Why hate the 2000s, I remember that it had soe pretty good cartoons, and bad ones, just like any other decade. Also, the recession made studios take less risks and cut back money in general, which is why there was a lot of shit in the late 2000s. The early and mid 2000s were pretty good. I mean in this image alone, I can honestly say Avatar was among the best Western cartoons ever made. Teen Titans, Megas XLR, Foster's, KND, FoP, etc. -- there is some good shit here.

It's okay to have preferences, but it's pretty obvious that there's nostalgia-fueled bias. Especially since there's some slight cherry picking going on and it seems like he deliberately chose expressive shots for the 90's and blank stares for the 10's. I know SU tends to be pretty expressive despite it's simplistic face style.

Also while I liked a lot of 90's shows as a kid with that style, I always hated that type of face.

Neither of those character designs actually look aesthetically appealing under either aesthetic, though.

Design is more than just a level of detail; it's what you focus on that draws the audience's eye, how the characters move and how they interact with the world. Both Steven Universe and Darkwing Duck look good in their respective shows because they were designed around their respective art aesthetics.
>>
The 2010 examples are all children, and the actual art for 1990s doesnt line up to the examples, where the humans aren't nearly as exaggerated. The art better fits 2005ish era animation a la Kim Possible and w/e

The story behind it is that Bajeet was originally supposed to be a very minor character. Once they cast an actor for him, they promoted him to a main character because they found the voice to be so funny. He ended up taking Irving's place in the group.

Was this posted to advocate in favor of 1990's?
Cause I think that style disgusting to look at when used in humans.
Even Harry's version makes me want to puke in my mouth, it's so fucking hideous.
It falls so hard on the uncanny valley that it might as well wear parachutes. Robotic looking grotesque humanoids.
As for the modern cartoons, not only they look great for cartoons (hint that something is human but have no anatomical accurate part clashing with gross cartoony eyes, noses and mouth and let the brain do it's work) but also animate a thousand times better.

>>77663372

animaniacs and bonkers, as well as many 90s cartoons with thinner/whacky characters was insanely guilty of "noodle-arms". just reminding you all.

Also, the simpler a model, the easier it is to animate. If you want animation to die, then by all means, push for the more complex models.

everything I said still applies. cartoons nowadays are mostly as boring and bland as it gets when to artstyles it comes to, and the main aesthetic a show possesses greatly influences its own feel and weight as much as its style of animation.

go ahead and tell me you're able to go completely unphased watching ATLA/LOK and not even notice the world of difference it has in contrast to, say, Clarence.
>>
That 2010 style really only applies to AD and Clarence.

In fact, that mock up character specifically just Clarence.

You would have a point if the art style were all that mattered in a show. South Park looks like garbage but it constantly pulls out quality episodes. Art is just something to look at. Well your honest opinion is shit and just driven because of the fact that "everyone else hates the show, I might as well do the same"

How can they not look pleasing? They are colorfull, well drawn and sure as hell look much more artsy than 80's or 90's cartoons not that it's necesary for them to be like that but it's a good touch for this show

I wish that we could have just stuck with the 90s. The designs were fun, the animation was the best, and the actual shows were, too. 80s looks nice until you see the animation.
>>
>>77681746
And the 80s was actually a step up from the 70s, animation wise.

Thinking about it animation started taking its nosedive at around the mid 60s, which I guess was the moment studios realized that adults were basically over cartoons and kids didn't give a shit about production value.

That's my impression, though. I won't pretend I'm a historian or anything.

For some it's also a preference to art quality over animation quality.
Having been born in 89 I grew up with 80s and 90s cartoons, and while the 90s animation was smoother, I always thought the 80s cartoons looked better overall.
>>
>>77682017
Get your eyes checked. Johnny Test didn't have near the level of expression and deformation as that image has, because Johnny Test is badly animated in Flash instead of hand-drawn.

This is a stupid analysis. I'm not sure why you genuinely believe either art-style is more appealing to dumb people than the other.
>>
At some point in every creative art most content creators stop using new tools to make better art, and instead focus on making it faster and cheaper.
>>
>>77678374
I know you're probably not here, but I agree. Animation in the standard cartoon has been watered down to easily drawn doodles originally just seen in webcomics and in the margins of school textbooks.
This says little for the quality of the writing, but if a cartoon isn't pleasing to look at then at the end of the day it's only done half its job.

I probably liked 40's American animation the best. Private Snafu, Popeye (early Famous Studios), and Elmer Fudd are some of my favorite animated humans.

If someone saw The Brave Little Toaster (1987) at any time now or in the future without knowing when it was made, what do you think they'd guess? The music and visuals are pre-Pixar gold, timeless as can be (grand, orchestral), with only the "Cutting Edge" song toward the film's end dropping many hints about "current" stuff. It sort of looks like the more experimental and stylized animation from the 60's, but it's way too fluid/shaded. And the way it moves sort of looks like higher-budget 90's work, but rounder, softer, and not rebellious or rough at all. Where does this film even fall, stylistically?

That's all I could think of, too. It looks like a living, breathing vision of Pixar's 2D concept art. Not quite UPA levels of "Picasso", but sort of a re-imagining of the style, that keeps the good stuff UPA left out, like some facial wrinkles and details around the eyes/mouths, but only as much as is needed for the character to look "just right." The old Pixar sketches have a sort of warm and classic feeling, between very detailed old cartoons, and the sometimes sterile, modern work in the 50's and 60's. The old Pixar style is almost timeless, now that I look closely.
>>
>>77684465
