The way his powers worked in the few stories I've read with him (his original appearance and in Daredevil Yellow specifically), made it seem as if his powers worked somewhat visually as well, which is why they couldn't affect Daredevil. In Killgrave's (as it was spelled back then) initial appearance, Matt says he's thankful for being blind and, more specifically, colorblind in the instance of their encounter, but that he can still feel Kilgrave's will tugging at the fringes of his mind. I think he ended up breaking his influence on the people around him by tossing a tablecloth or something over his head and tying him up.
