Does this annoy anyone else? This is really prominent in modern cartoons where they just blatantly show off their influences rather than being inspired from it and creating something new from it. Like, I know, "all art is unoriginal" blahblah, but, goddamn does it feel lazy when show's don't even try.

And it's not even a once or twice thing, references are littered throughout Adventure Time, Steven Universe, and Garden Wall. I dunno it's just, like, for shows that get praised for their creativity, I would like to actually see what they are capable of doing on their own rather than how well can they emulate their influences.

Maybe I'm just tired of love letter adaptations.

The exact musculature and mechanics escape me, I'm no xenobiologist, but you can clearly see that as it's plantar flexing with it's left foreleg and right hindleg it's left hindleg and right foreleg are in their swinging phase.

As it's right foreleg with be plantarflexing, his left upper extremity will bring the majority of his torso foreward, overtaking his head while the left foreleg will remained planted and become the further most portion of his body currently from our perspective.

Artists have always blatantly ripped each other off, the only reason it wasn't noticed as often in the past is they didn't have the Internet to cross reference shit. Back when that original postcard was painted you didn't have the ability to google search "watermelon car" for earlier versions of the same concept.

>Artists have always blatantly ripped each other off
That doesn't really make it better. The original is always superior. It just comes across as lazy when someone is trying to build a cool world inspired by folklore tales and then throws in every vaudeville and fleischer reference they can. Even if what you made ends up not being original and you find out someone else did it first, at least you tried rather than just making constant homages to things.

I think it's because of the internet that it's now boring to see these references to things. The curtains have been pulled and that one thing I thought was creative, turns out it was not. I'd be really disappointed if I found out the entire layout of Inside Out's headquarters was just taken from another film rather than gradually built upon by a team of artists.

Yeah, when it's that obvious, it's clearly intentional. In OtGW specifically it fits with the theme of things that have been forgotten to use direct references to obscure old shit.

Sometimes people aren't copying shit because they don't think they can do better on their own, but inserting references to see "hey, i like this thing, i wonder if the fans like thing. i'll slip it in and see if they catch it. when they do, they'll love it." And they do. On /co/ there are lots of people that love catching easter eggs and references and saying "Oh, creator liked that thing? Well no wonder the show has that kind of vibe"

Also, sometimes artists see things and say "Shit that thing looks so cool. I wanna use that idea." and don't let "oh but it already exists here. i'll have to alter it so it's not clearly recognizable so no one accuses me of copying..." hold them back. Take this egg costume, also seen in OtGW. If you want to use it, you can't just turn it into an eggplant costume instead of an egg. That's stupid. Just go ahead and use the egg costume, that's the thing that was cool. Sometimes it comes off as a ripoff, sometimes clumsy artists actually do commit ripoffs when they're trying to do this, but sometimes it just works.

>The original is always superior.
You mean like when Shakespeare used all those old legends and stories he didn't come up with on his own, but adapted into his own shit? Boy I sure do love the originals of those that everyone totally remembers for their own merit and always prefers over the Shakespeare version.

There are lots of times the remakes is better than the original For another example, just look at The Thing. Did you know that was a shitty movie before the 80s version was made?

Most of the best references you never even catch are references to begin with because the new one is so much better.

Eh, it's better in games because they give you an unrealistic amount of control over your movement, and they let you build momentum instead of losing speed and/or height on each swing. Still cool, though, and I like how Korra had a similar idea with the metalbender police

you can do that irl when you swing, you just have to twist your body properly. just like when you swing on a swingset
okay maybe not to the extent spidey does, but.. keep in mind he has super strength and he weighs like 150 pounds. if he were to snap his legs upward he could TOTALLY kick himself higher into the air using nothing but his own leverage, and twist and turn in midair with ease.
plus don't forget elasticity. the weblines presumably let him bounce a bit after the end of each swing
no the only really impossible thing about webswinging is how instantaneously the web reaches another building

AT sometimes gets downright obscure with it too. That pillow world episode which everyone assumed was just a star trek reference, and had a star trek actor for good measure.. the ORIGINAL story that star trek was cribbing from was called 'the world in a pillow', so they went OLDSCHOOL with that shit
