If I remember correctly the animator had a hard time finding a good voice for Sock so she just went with her friend or girlfriend or something.
The voice acting was pretty bad and the weird fujo angle was off-putting.
Like the animation though.
It was probably a bit too ambitious for a student project. The devil was cool, not a fan of the main character's design.

Why is this suddenly popular all of a sudden?
I've seen it pop up here and there over the years when we have animated shorts threads but suddenly this exploded in popularity.
It's ok, especially for a student. Design of Socs is dumb and so is his story(he killed his parents and himself because he's a psycho but oh wait he's really nice and caring).

It's a common thing in a lot of web comic artists now-a-days who make characters where, the instance you ask "but why", their entire character falls apart.

A sociopath kills his parents and then kills himself - pretty believable, probably happens at least once a year in real life.
A depressed teenage kid is seeing demons and talking to himself - also pretty believable and probably happens to thousands of depressed schizophrenic kids every year.
So all in all this story is pretty believable, if you just assume the entire "hell" thing is a bit of artistic license that glues two unrelated facts to one another.
They are obviously gay for one another.

Seriously, there was no subtlety about it at all. They made constant and repeat overt examples of their attraction to each other.

A polite, quirky, on the verge of being happy-go-lucky sociopath kills his parents then kills himself. Other than the backstory, Sock shows no actual sociopathic tendencies and the edgy backstory comes across as incredibly hamfisted.
And for the other character, nothing shows us he's depressed other than his design. He spends most of the short being annoyed by Sock or trying to befriend him. Neither character really go for their intended personality, they just feel like early draft cute gay Tumblr-y characters.
Drawing ability is good, but that style is something I see in every other artist right now.
Writing is terrible.
Voice acting was bad.
Foley work was bad.
Premise is lackluster, the idea is there, but the execution is all wrong.
Overall, I'm not sure what /co/ is seeing in this other than "I want to ship these two".
