Who They Are and How They Came to Be is pretty decent backstory with gen 12 and gen 13 got they powers.

That's honestly why I enjoyed the Gail Simone run so much, because of the character work within it.
In their original origin, only Fairchild had any real humanity to her. They developed some over time as they removed themselves from 'sersious' 90s fair to more light hearted stuff. In Simone's run, that happens right off the bat.
But I will probably always remember one moment from that original run that helped define Fairchild. She just took down guards trying to kill her, and she checked to make sure they weren't dead after she punched them through stuff.
It made her the only likable character for me initially.
Simone emphazised each character in her own takes on them. Hell, the entire 12 issue arc was "They were made to be one thing, but fought against their origins and became something more."
Which is really a meta-metaphore for what happened to the gang to begin with.
It was a little on the nose, of course, but I don't mind ham and cheese in my stories.
