Yeah, it was so telegraphed really. Snyder did some IGN interview and he more or less confirmed the death saying something like "there's no happiness for batman."

Snyder... I can tell he cares about Batman and is trying to write big crazy epic story arcs, but its really all the same-- some faux mystery villain where its like "who is X and what is their connection to Batman's past?" (every villain is integrally tied to Batman's history?) and the villain is way too hax. The villain destroys a large section of Gotham or all of gotham or gets into the batcave-- the villain does something so obviously huge just for "huge's" sake.
It's almost like I've read this before. All of snyder's stuff gets a bit repetitive cause he only does it in one way.

Batman will get hit with the Riddlers nefarious new weapon and turn into a baby. Alfred will shed a tear as he picks up the now infant Batman and begins breastfeeding him. "This time, this time I will do right by him" he will whisper as he pats the nursing Batman. The issue will end with Gotham in flames, and Alfred closing it with. "Come child, the night is too dark for you." Followed immediately by Batbaby and Friends: the series.
And it will all be canon.
