Draw me like one of your French comic girls...

(Seriously, tho...what is it that makes the character design from Europe so damn appealing? And how can I harness its power as an artist?)

Oh! Its all by the same person. That's helpful to know. Now to crib the style.

European comics were made since 19th century by artists who wanted to tell a story, and American comics were made by publishing companies who wanted to make money on kids while underpaying cheapest artists they can afford.
They started being made in the 80s.

So we simply have like a hundred years advantage of artistic tradition to imitate which eventually produced greats like Moebius, while you guys have people in tacky spandex and try to emulate them. Worse, American comic fans are used to silly costumes so you assume that silly costumes are okay, meaning you guys accept costume designs that wouldn't even be considered in Europe.

So it boils down to tradition and higher standards.
>>
>>77588714
Started being made BY ARTISTS in the 80s, I wanted to say.
>>
>>77588714
I mean, compare: 30's in comics in America on the right, 30's in comics in Europe on the left. Difference is kinda obvious.
>>
>>77588714
I'm European and I am appaled by how conceited you are.
It's just differents artistic traditions. There's a lot of French comics whose covers are glorious but the art inside, not so much.
>>
>>77588848
Are you trolling or have you just not read many comics?
>>
>>77588964
>French comics whose covers are glorious but the art inside, not so much.
Then it's not that different from American comics then. I often see great covers and then become so disappointed by the art inside. Wtf is wrong with the comic artists? Is it the discipline? Are covers often done by actual fine arts graduates and the content done by mediocre self learned guys?
>>
>>77590661
Publishers hire artists to do the cover, yes. That's standard practice in cape comics.
>>
>>77587271
Relax. Become chill. Don't worry about fighting for freedom, or fighting the terrorists. Draw comfy stuff.
>>
>>77590661
Time. Cover artist has a month to do a single page picture. Interior artist has a month to do 30 of them.
>>
>>77591021
>Interior artist has a month to do 30 of them.
>30

lol are you new or something? Most american comics are 20-22 pages now.
>>
I always liked Joel Jurion the best in terms of European artists.

European artists have a lot of "whimsical" details, interesting and often beautiful designs and more often than not really competent people to do the colors.

The US has artists who should never have attempted something outside of tumblr, writers who got all their experience on twitter and some guy named Greg who colors using the paintbucket tool.

>>
>>77587271

Practice and tradition. There's a shitload of people drawing comics, in a lot of genres, so it feels more attractive to artists to try their hand at it.

I really think the way the American comic market suddenly focused on superheroes so much that everything else was nearly forgotten at a point in time(to the point that in common parlance, "comicbooks" became synonymous with "superhero stuff") really hurt it, because it became fiated on a specific way of doing things and things outside that norm bame more "risky".
>>
>>77591073
That would be Americans, with being one of the richest countries in the world but most citizens having Third World quality of life.
>>
>>77591136
Europe has epic quality of life compared to America

>live with your parents forever
>never own property
>never own a car
>commute on public transport with shitskins
>get kileld by said shitskins

a-at least you have free healthcare

>50% of income is taxed

whoops there goes that

This of course only applies to "western" europe, eastern europeans live worse than Africans
>>
I don't think it's a coincidence that broadly the best artists working in American comics happen to be European, as well as Brits being some of the most celebrated writers. There is a stronger cultural tradition of artistic respect. Just like how it shouldn't surprise you that manga doesn't usually aim for realism.

It's similar to how so many British actors are/have been in American movies because of the stronger theatrical influence. (The US loves theatre too but moreso on the spectacle side and only in the bigger cities, which are too far apart from the majority of the population)
>>
>>77591044
That and inking and colors are done by other people. You basicaly have a three man team. American artists are given more time than mangakas (even if they have a 4-7 man team and that it's usually in b/w it's still done within a weekly basis), they should have a much better quality. This is where I give Sana Takeda respects. Sure it could be mistaken for animu but her works are easy on the eyes, elegant, beautifully done. Her work ethic is absolutely commendable too.

It sounds to me like you're describing American milennials, actually. Also, Europe is 90% white when USA is 60% white. Despite that, America is full of fascist racist crackers like yourself, so that is also definitely a huge bonus.

Also you're full of shit, because half of Europe has better quality of life rating that USA. Germany, Austria, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Netherlands, all above you guys - and this rating doesn't take all undocumented immigrants into account.

The only things you are worldwide leaders is prison population, military spendings (biggest than entire rest of NATO combined), gun ownership and percentage of adults that believe in angels.

A true fucking paradise to live in, I bet.

Then again, niggers are known to be asshurt about racism in every country they live in.
>>

>what is it that makes the character design from Europe so damn appealing?
Artistic talent and a willingness to experiment with their own style rather than just copying other artists.

>how can I harness its power as an artist?
Learn to draw, properly, by drawing from life and taking classes. Then don't be afraid to experiment.
