Colors on this used to be a bit duller but an Anon posted a more color saturated take and fuck me if it didn't look better.
I wanted something that looked different compared to the classic red and blues, but had enough elements of the original to make you think "Yeah, that's Spidey".
I wanted a design that had bits of both the Ben Spidey Suit and the v2 Superior Suit sans the uneven webbing and black lenses, and I think I got a decent compromise between the two designs, along with a good color palette.

I mean, they were really really good. But also some of their designs just look silly if you try to straddle the line between iconic and fitting in with the modern house styles. Look at Galactus - it was great for the art and narrative styles then. Grandiose, alien, almost robotic. But he doesn't fit in so well now that people seem to value sleek and "realistic". Others are just really simple, so it's easy to go back to them and redesigns tend to be overdesigns. Spider-Man, the F4, etc. have very simple designs that have become embedded in comics culture and don't really need to be changed all that much.

I'd say it requires not only a deft hand at design but also attention to intent on the part of the original creator. Take Orion for an example. Boring, simplistic design that looks too generically superheroic for an atomic age space god. Compare that to Cliff Chiang's redesign, all he did was turn it into a jacket and pants, tweak the colors, and add a bit of detailing and suddenly Orion looks like he'd be home in any Raygun Gothic/space opera story.
