Here is the scene with their epic duel. Star Wars issue 2 of the new canon.
BasicallyLuke and friends are running shennanigans on the Empire and fucking with their bases. Vader unexpectedly shows up. Luke, realizing the man who killed Ben and is the uppermost evil of the Empire Luke is aware of, decides to challenge him. This is because Luke is still riding high off of destroying the Death Star with the Force. He's full of heroism and - he quickly learns - stupidity. The fight is incredibly short and Luke barely survives thanks to lucky happenstance.
After this humbling encounter Luke realizes he's not some golden hero of destiny who can overcome every threat with courage and the Force. He realizes he has no idea what the fuck the Force is, what he is, or what they're both capable of. So he goes off on alone to find anything that can teach him how to be a Jedi.
It's actually a pretty useful encounter and helps explain how Luke went from the idealistic, dream filled farmboy to the calmer, more seasoned rebel fighter he is in Empire who also happened to pick up more tricks with the Force even before Yoda trains him.

Well this was hardly the only influence on Luke. There's been some more in the ongoing comic and there's also some novels with Luke around this time, including one where he sort of teams up with Sarco Plank from TFA.
This is more what starts Luke's realization that he really is no Jedi, at least yet. Vader doesn't just wreck Luke's shit, he uses his own (in more ways than one) lightsaber to murder a bunch of slaves. It's the point at which Luke learns that destroying the Death Star was actually ridiculously easy compared to dealing with Vader (and the Emperor is even worse but he doesn't know that yet).

Make the family bond more, make us have a sense that they really truly care for and would die for each other.
But then break the family dynamic. Someone turns evil, someone completely disagrees and leaves the rebellion, ect.
We need character drama, because lets face it, the "oh no, bad guys!" drama is always going to be resolved in 1-2 episodes unless its a season finale where someone (probably a bad guy) will die again.
