>>
Faces look incredible here.
>>
Well... a far cry from what I wanted.

But... somewhat better than I expected. Humphries appears to be making some semblance of effort, even if it flies in the face of most of the things I liked about Englehart's origin. I still don't understand why he sees Peter as some kind of idiot though.
>>
It wasn't bad, but the MCU shit needs to stop.
>>
>>77546326
Wait so Peter went from being a smart NASA astronaut to a mechanic wannabe astronaut and he only got that job through nepotism?

Humphries is trying his best to ruin and dumb down this character and he's succeeding
>>
This...

Doesn't suck.

Looking forward to the next one.

>>77546265
The fuck? Star Lord's entire time in space is now after the Avengers have already been established and they've encountered the Kree?
>>
>>77548654
He was 30 on the relaunch and according to Spider-Man 13 years have passed since he became Spider-Man (which happened around the time the Avengers appeared). Considering this story takes place when he's 18 years old, the Avenger have been around for a year already during this story.

>>77551390
I don't think teenagers give a shit about his pre-established origin.
>>
>>77551351
As far as I can tell this is just expanding on what Bendis did a few years back, it's not another brand new origin.

I just don't understand why they keep writing Peter as an idiot though. Like he only comes across as an idiot in the movie if you didn't pay attention and just went along with the notion of Andy Dwyer playing a superhero or some crap.

You made that word up.
>>
>>77551624
I think it's because Marvel is commited to the comedy and the "losers" aspect of the movie Guardians. This is not limited to Humphries, you can see it in every other appearance of the Guardians. With Drax, Rocket and Groot it wasn't hard to show them as losers because no one takes them seriously but with Peter, the change is very noticeable.

However, I would like to point out Peter wasn't an idiot here. He was the only one who could make the ship work. And some dialogue made him sound very intelligent despite his position. I think the angle for him is brilliant but lazy.

>>
As a filthy fucking casual, is his original origin not canon anymore? How does this new origin fit?
>>
>>77551259
I was so hyped when he showed up during war of kings, but then nothing ever happened.
>>
>>77553319
I went back and read WoK all over again because I thought I missed him showing up in the main event.
>>
>>77553129
Retcon, since most people who remember is actual origin are no longer alive.
>>
>>77553129
Englehart's origin wasn't canon since a long time ago. Claremont and a comic in the 80s called the Saga Begins retconned everything out.

Bendis did a more updated version of those origins but almost completely the same (only changing the lizards aliens for Badoons and making Meredith's death in her house instead of an open field). This origin fits with that one. It's pretty safe to say every single comic before Annihilation is an alternate universe now.
>>
>>77553129
His original origin hasn't been strictly canon for a long time. The Englehart/Claremont/Moench stories have long been considered an AU.

>How does this new origin fit?

Well enough with newer material, though some of Giffen's material made explicit references to the Master of the Sun.
>>
>>77552476
>but lazy
I wouldn't call him lazy when he spends many hours learning how to fly after his normal work.
And he's certainly not stupid.
He is dumb in how he is too enthusiasthic and rushes things without considering the consequences.
But that's often portrayed as a positive trait for superheroes to have.
>>
>>77546546
Well, I fucking hate Marvel now. They were shit before, but fuck these new books are garbage.
If they're not turning established characters into minorities or gay or women, they are fucking up and pushing the flavor of the month agenda.
I guess they wanted Starlord to be more like movie Starlord ? Whatever. I'm giving up now. It'll be to painful to fallow this bullshit any further down the rabbit hole.
These new takes are worse than any crap they squatted out in the 70's or 90's.
>>
>>77554019
>These new takes are worse than any crap they squatted out in the 70's

I mean, that was basically the era that birthed modern Cosmic, but whatever.
>>
>>77553806
>he is too enthusiasthic and rushes things without considering the consequences.
Ironically this is how DnA Starlord was described by Dick Rider.

I think one of the main reasons why people didn't buy Humphries Starlord before was because he never got to do anything. He never got to be the guy who solved everything and looked cool doing it. It's this mentality that the woman has to be better than the men everytime that always pushed Kitty Pryde to save him and everyone else instead of the opposite. I'm sure people wouldn't mind him being more funny or happy if only he was shown being more competent. Have him be the one to save the day in a big way once and have Kitty praise him big. That's all he needs to recover.
>>
>>77554541
Just because it started in the 70's doesn't mean it was great or good by any measure. Cosmic Marvel started getting great around the time of Annihilation and War of Kings.
Kirby had some great Cosmic stuff, but his art was where it was at, the stories were just bland stuff.

But hey who needs quality, right?
>>
>>77554846
>Cosmic Marvel started getting great around the time of Annihilation and War of Kings
>started

Thanks for confirming that you've never actually read anything else.
>>
>>77554874
I have. I really like the Kirby 2001 stuff.

No need to thank me, but I have read the older cosmic stuff. A lot of it was entertaining but nor great. Starlin's cosmic stuff stands out as pretty interesting.
I just found the the DandA stories were more rich with character development. Sorry to not be a dick a bout stuff, but hey you're doing a good job for the both of us.
>>
It was an interesting read, probably would have been better if the Earth part was two issues long but whatever. Hopefully Kitty Pryde won't hijack the book after the story is over.
>>
>>77555093
I could say the same about most of the DnA stuff. Annihilation and Thanos Imperative were great but the rest was between entertaining to meh to plain boring at some points.
>>
>>77546336
Peter should've been kept as a driven, selfish asshole with rage issues, not a newbie smartass loser with a space complex.
>>
>>77557973
This Peter is driven and has rage issues. Just like the old Starlord had a space complex and kind of a loser as well.
>>
>>77557481
Agreed. Mostly.
>>
>>77558503
It was nice to see hints of his pure adoration for space in this if nothing else. That's an important aspect of his character that I think really went over Bendis' head.

It's really weird, this really is far from my ideal "re-origin," yet I'm still sort of begrudgingly impressed that Humphries didn't completely shit the bed on this one.
>>
>>77558503
He seems determined and desperate to go to space but he is not that ragey, he comes more as frustrated honestly.

Original Peter was so driven he shunned women and only socialized with a fucking owl and he was so driven he actually became an astronaut, and he had to steal the Star-Lord title when it was denied to him, guy fought for everything he got.

This Meme-Lord is only half driven and he's so dumb he couldn't make it to astronaut and only has a job because his mother's friend magically made it happen. The only thing he did was sneak into the Kree Warbird amd take it into space but he still relies on Yondu and his crew to save his ass (ans you know that's what will happen).

Oh and he also somehow found time to start a band, at least according to Humphries.

But honestly this origin isn't bad, it's mediocre and non offensive but it's very bland compared to the original one.
>>
>>77559987
Yeah, sums up my feelings nicely. Not as good as the original but not as bad as I was expecting. And it certainly had more to it than Bendis'.
>>
>>77551975
I find that sums up a lot of cosmic right before ANAD. Nothing to really dislike but nothing to love ether.
>>
>>77554738
He is also getting abused by Kitty or threaten and insulted by Gamora, and he just smiles and takes it.

I mean even when Gamora called him on not taking full advantage of the cosmic cube he argued back, old Peter never took anyone's shit.
>>
>>77552476
>Marvel is commited to the comedy and the "losers" aspect of the movie Guardians

But those aspects were with the characters before the movie.
>>
>>77553636
>every single comic before Annihilation is an alternate universe now.
It's Age of Ultron, actually. That's where the reset happens in canon.
>>
>>77553806
I think he meant the writing was lazy.
>>
>>77552476
Yeah after Humphries had him misspell sorry and pretty much all the other characters refer to him as an idiot it was a breath of fresh air to see he was not a total moron.

Still it doesn't compare to the original.
>>
>>77553758
Well Bendis subtly refered to them and so did DnA, they weren't outright canon but they were treated as if they were.
>>
>>77551624
>>77552476
>>77553806

He's a savant, good at what he dedicates himself too but a retard in everything else.

Basically he was good at flying ships but there is a reason why he never made it to astronaut.
>>
>>77560196
Annihilation is still canon. So is all the DnA run. They were referenced in plenty of comics including Bendis ones.

>>77559987
>This Meme-Lord is only half driven and he's so dumb he couldn't make it to astronaut and only has a job because his mother's friend magically made it happen. The only thing he did was sneak into the Kree Warbird amd take it into space but he still relies on Yondu and his crew to save his ass (ans you know that's what will happen).
Practicing in a simulator in all his free time is hardly the attitude of someone half driven. And as >>77552476 said he's not dumb at all. It's you who is minimizing all he accomplished in this issue. Being dumb is not the only reason why someone isn't accomplished. There's plenty of reasons why he probably couldn't get into NASA. As a matter of fact, it's hard to believe old Quill made it that far after escaping the orphanage at 13 years old. How the hell did he manage to go to school, college and then NASA if he escaped? With what money? With what time? It's kinda dumb.
>>
I'm really glad Humphries is writing this over Bendis. All of Bendis' Guardians was just really straight forward ("We have to save thing! Thing saved! The End") and hopefully Humphries will give this story more life.

When rereading all of Quill & Json's arguments I became really curious about their first encounter and eventual falling out. I think Peter is going to love being a Star-prince until he learns the truth and reluctantly gives up all his new found wealth and power. I think this is really where the meat of the story will be.
>>
>>77560633
>>
>>77560740
>>
>>77560592
Orphan kids can get a lot of benefits if they are smart or prove to be exceptional.

Face it, the guy can't spell the word sorry, Humphries writes everyone refering to him as an idiot, also idiots can be persitent and learn skills.

Nah senpai he is an idiot.
>>
>>77560592
>It's kinda dumb
Just like Star-Lord then.
>>
>>77560592
Humphries also said the origin takes place before Annihilation so that means he considers the story (or what he knows bout it) canon.
>>
>>77560976
>Orphan kids can get a lot of benefits if they are smart or prove to be exceptional.
But he escaped. He wasn't in the orphanage anymore. There was no one to give him any benefit anymore unless he went straight to another orphanage which would make his escape more stupid.

As for the other things. I'm more inclined to believe the Sorry thing was a mistake of the artist. It can easily be excused in universe as him running out of flowers. People insult him because he's an easy target, not because they think he's an actual idiot. Both things are hardly real proof to brand him an idiot.
>>
>>77561130
Cool. I am hoping he will use a decent amount of fantastic elements in this story.
