She doesn't have a role. She's never found one outside of "the girl" in a boy's comic book/cartoon. Her tv show took thirty years to make it to screen, and was retooled three times in three seasons. Her second tv show took another thirty years and died at the unbroadcast pilot. Her movie has been cancelled at least twice in the last decade. Her current live-action actress is only the third official casting for a feature or television presentation, compared to the eight or so Batman and Superman both had already.
Is it really surprising she's the girl in this schoolyard? They literally can't think of anything else to do with her; well, they can - they have - but everything they've tried has been shot down either by studio people or the actual public.
