Iron giant had a similar weapon as well (without the pixelization part). As for the rest, nuclear chest cannon is cooler imho. That scene at the end where he goes ballistic is still one of my favourite displays of pure bad-ass-ness.

Also, Ideon is pretty weak unless you fill it with dying babies. If you can't invoke the Ide at will (and you generally fucking can't, it's so unreliable) all it's got are human-made missles and punches.
Daitarn 3 is stronger than Ideon on an average day.
