Tell me about the New Gods, /co/
>>
There came a time when the Old Gods died! The brave died with the cunning! The noble perished, locked in battle with the unleashed evil! It was the last day for them! An ancient era was passing in fiery holocaust! The final moment came with the fatal release of the indescribable power — which tore the home of the Old Gods asunder — split it in great halves — and filled the universe with the blinding death-flash of its destruction! In the end there were two giant molten bodies, spinning slow and barren — clean of all that had gone before — adrift in the fading sounds of cosmic thunder... Silence closed upon what had happened — a long, deep silence — wrapped in massive darkness... it was this way for an age... THEN—THERE WAS NEW LIGHT!

meet the new gods, same as the old gods.

I love that song.

There are people who told me Jack Kirby did not use pot or acid

and I'm just not sure I believe that

I'd rather serve Trigon.

Kirby's Darkseid is SO LAME. Morrison wrote him better.

Kirby's Darkseid worked better as a foil for Orion.
Hell, Kirby's Highfather was an amazing parallel to Orion too.

The Hunger Dogs was a decent finale.

Bait, but will get a lot of serious replies

>The Hunger Dogs was a decent finale.
I disagree, I found it pretty poor compared to Kirby's other Fourth World stuff.

>I disagree, I found it pretty poor compared to Kirby's other Fourth World stuff.

I've only read the version in the Omnibus, which said some pages had been re-edited or some such, but I think that Evanier makes a good case for it.

Yeah, by the time that it had come out a heavy amount of the steam that Kirby had invested in the story had run out.
And the story as is is pretty eclectic. You have Orion trying to get one last bid toward Darkseid and Darkseid creating a new weapon for his own bid, and it's not quite as engaging.

But it brings up some nice ideas. Like how Orion is dangerous toward becoming not more like Darkseid...but as Izaya back when he was run mad with grief.
Like Izaya he has to make a choice, and that entire aspect of the Hunger Dogs, really it's entire conceit, it's pretty good.

That and the Lightray goodbye was nicely played.

What should I read up on to know more about these cooks

Something convenient like a graphic novel or some sort of compilation would be appreciated

Jack Kirby's Fourth World Omnibus, four volumes.
>>
>>81694708
4 complete omnibuses tell the entirety of the main saga.

>>81694685
Yeah, just Darkseid and a few of his elite are all that get any real play.
>>
>>81692664
Why is Darkseid so drab while his children and cohorts are so outlandish?
>>
>>81694741
>Yeah, just Darkseid and a few of his elite are all that get any real play.
Tbh, Kanto and his "we shall meet again, worthy opponent" is adorable.

Kalibak looks like shit, too. No idea is there any New God that looks worse.

Any more recommendations?

They aren't appearing much, I'm afraid. Great Darkness Saga, Genesis, Legends, Cosmic Odyssey, Final Crisis, Orion's solo book.

Orion omnibus.

I figured that omnibus collected issues from solo.
>>
>>81694685
>phase out

I wonder if that was the first time that sci-fi buzzword was ever used?
>>
>>81694791
It's charming and sincere. I prefer this to the enduring sarcasm of today's fiction.
>>
>>81694697
>but NOT a wedding

This is kinda hilarious.
>>
>>81695444
It does and some other stuff. There were regular trade paperbacks collecting the first five issues and one collecting the back up stories iirc.
>>
>>81694735
Good thing DC likes to keep one of Kirby's most celebrated works in print.
>>
>>81692664
When Kirby left Marvel for DC, he had just finished writing Thor and had contributed a lot to that side of things. He still had a lot of drama left in him and wanted to keep writing mythology, so he invented the New Gods who, at first, were basically a copy of his Thor stuff. I mean, look at Odin/All Father. After they stopped being a carbon copy of his Thor work, they became some o the best stuff he ever created and that's why no one's ever heard of them.
>>
>>81695645
It always had top tier art, though. And he did it all himself, except coloring I think.
>>
Foundit kinda boring, could not finish.
>>
I always found t amusing that Kirby was writing and drawing four issues a month.

>FOX fucks up Kirby F4 movie
>FOX fucks up Kirby F4 / Silver Surfer movie
>Marvel fucks up Kirby Thor movie
>Marvel fucks up Kirby Thor movie again
>FOX fucks up Marvel F4 movie again
>Snyder fucks up Kirby New Gods movie

Great job all around every one. Kirby was so prolific literally every studio has access to one of his properties and they all blew it. I guess we should thank Gunn for pic related cause that's all were getting.

Holding out hope for the MCU Inhumans movie just feels delusional at this point.

So what exactly can a Mother Box do?

I only ever see boom tubes but there seem to be other uses
>>
>>81697096
Helps our boy Scott Free escape from shit. Ping ping ping ping ping, muthafucka.
>>
>>81695645
Then he continued them again at Marvel in the form of Eternals.
>>
>>81697096
Pretty much what >>81697208 said. It's like computer connected to Source and New Gods have it. For some reason, they keep showing Mother Box as Miracle's tool, no idea why.
>>81697212
What a hack, ripping off himself.
>>
>>81697261

That's not too helpful

It can hack stuff?
>>
>>81697411
Yeah, hack stuff, telepathy, energy beams, give its wearer Spider-sense, regenerate user and stuff.
>>
>>81697096
>>81697411

It's a sentient super computer. What its exact capabilities are is left deliberately left vague as with pretty much anything else when Kirby got really into writing mythology comics in the 70's.

It's mythology, it's above all of us.
>>
>>81694685
It would have been better bait if Morrison didn't write the New Gods better than anyone save Kirby. Really only Kirby, Simonson, and Morrison have done them any justice.
>>
>>81697411
It does whatever the plot needs it to.
>>
>>81697474

How powerful if beams?

Building buster? Block? City? Country? World?
>>
>>81697532
I'll be better prepared for next time.
>>81697740
It just channels energy, I expressed badly. It's not offensive weapon.
>>
>>81697740
Seriously, it just does what the plot needs it to. It barely follows a set of rules. Don't overthink it mate.
