This comic is great space opera. It's a what if the Mongol Horde was interplanetary. There's something about a deity as well.
Captain Marvel vol 4 and 5 by Peter David are both pretty great.

Vol 4 is alright for the most part. It's only 35 issues, and it has some fun stuff in it. It dives into some pretty good space action.
Vol 5 is the one where he goes insane. It goes into morality and personal responsibility, etc, all while going into whether or not he was actually insane at all. The last arc is probably the best.
All in all, it's some great space-writing and kind of laid out the foundation for the DnR runs of future cosmic stuff.
The part where Johns' Green Lantern gets really good.

It can be hard to take the villains seriously sometimes, which makes the first season hard kinda over the top. Once Scorpius shows up though everything gets better.
