Well, it seemed clear she has some romantic interest in him. They were very similar people afterall, plus he saved her life. Thing is they never really acted on it because Max has no capacity for it, and she had more important shit to do. Most of it comes to a head when she gets almost killed, Max shows more concern than he ought have. But that's wrong. Max has visible concern in his eyes when she's close to death, wouldn't have that if he didn't develop some sort of feelings. When he leaves, she's visibly upset for a moment, then a sort of relieved look comes across her face. It's a thing that builds up slowly, and dissipates at the end. There's no need to have every chaarcter say what they feel in a visual medium.
This is also George miller, in the film certain small things paint bigger pictures and help establish things.

Marceline loses her vamp stuff because she got sick of being burned by the sun. The gunk pumped out o f her brings back the vampires that she killed to get her superpowers because apparently you don't gget the whle package witha bite.
