Why does Disney even need to keep lobbying for the extension of copyright? Isn't Mickey trademarked? As far as I know, trademarks don't expire if they're still in use.

Mickey is a trademark and nobody is protected as long as Disney renews the trademark. The reason they keep extendeding copyright is because they don't want anyone to profit off their old films. That's it. The films made from public domain characters.

Money.

Trademark would protect advertising using their brand, but wouldn't stop their use.

So, for example, one would be able to include Mickey in their cartoon, just wouldn't be able to use his name for marketing or titles.

They're the greediest company on earth.

Disney doing the copyright thing should be the least of your problems. Because of Walt and his copying shitty storybooks and making them into some gay bland musical. It set an image and made inspiration that most cartoons are for kids which is still viewed the same way today. Yes, Walt tried to make more "adult" cartoons but it was too late and he tried to appeal to both audiences and it bombed horribly. He is also the reason to why the only way to get into the industry is by going to Calarts. And his company has been incredibly wealthy for decades and decades and is slowly trying to own every single property that you probably liked as a kid and it's only going to get worse. Walt has effectively killed any kind of good cartoons and animation we could have gotten in the west. Of course I'm ignoring Simpsons and Hanna-Barbera. But I will save that rant for another thread.

Nice pasta.

Once Steamboat Willie's copyright ends, not only can it be reproduced freely, adaptations can also be made. That means anyone can make new films based on Mickey, Minnie, Pete, and the boat. Grimdark version of Mickey? Yes. Porn? Absolutely. All of those derivative works will have their own copyright and merchandising.

So despite copyright and trademarks being separate entities, losing the copyright will lower the value of the *brand* overall. Disney absolutely has an incentive to extend copyright. Whether Disney should be allowed to do so is a different discussion.

Goddamn, I really hate that style of Mickey. It's so ugly. The new one should be adopted for all merchandising.

You mean Planet Disney©.

They already ran into this problem with some early comic strips that lapsed into public domain. Some third-party publisher tried to publish a hard cover collection of them, but Disney said that since they still owned Mickey, they weren't allowed to do anything that would make the buyers think Mickey had anything to do with it. In short, it would be impossible to publish.

The publishers released it as a book with a completely black cover with only the word "Mouse" as the title. Disney couldn't do shit to stop them.

You mean the old one?

And shit, even though >>77497678 is a pasta, it's pretty true that Disney, unlike say Osamu Tezuka, never got to that stage where he could tell mature/adult stories to a wider audience. I feel that we're all definitely the worse for it, not least because so much creative potential is pissed away in favor of bland merchandising and IP hogging.

Then again, I just finished reading pic related, so I'm pretty bummed that we'll never have an animated movie that follows the same tone. (Especially the last two issues, holy fuck.) By this point, I'll just settle for anything that has that unmistakable Disney touch of wonder, fun, and adventure.

The "new one" is a rework of the original, anon. Watch Plane Crazy.

It's not a pasta. I really made this myself. I have no true hate for Disney despite my insults but I also can't just ignore that we are probably worse for it. In an alternate world, Walt was not successful and the west will probably endure both pros and cons for it. I wish we an see such a world for curiosity sake.

Just yesterday I saw a diaper brand at the store that had Mickey in the OP style crawling on his hands and knees like an infant. That is just so far on the other side of the spectrum from the current shorts and certain Topolino.
