Doc is Doc Strange. He's basically their ripoff of Doc Savage, except with a superpower (Doc Strange takes a serum called Alosun).

http://pdsh.wikia.com/wiki/Doc_Strange

Alan Moore later used the character and named him Tom Strange, as an alternate Earth counterpart to Tom Strong.
>>

It's Golden Age comic science, none of it makes sense.

Shit, just look at Jay Garrick's origin (albeit that one actually WAS based on a scientific experiment that was published at the time, where exposing mice to heavy water reportedly increased their metabolic rates).

>Lisellotte von Schellendorf was raised by the Germans to be Valkyrie, the most alluring and evil woman of all, and to be the most skilled and deadly of all pilots. Valkyrie and her girl squadron, the Airmaidens, were trained to be perfect Nazis by Herr Oberst, a Nazi colonel. After training, Valkyrie blasted her way through the Allied pilots until she ran into Airboy. When she captured Airboy, three members of her squadron hid him in an old hangar but were found out by Oberst. He ordered them to be whipped and Airboy killed. Although she was all right with seeing the young boy sent to his death, the prospect of seeing her subordinates whipped appalled Valkyrie. She tried to persuade Oberst to show mercy, but the Nazi commander didn't budge. Suddenly realizing that all Nazis were cruel and evil, Valkyrie killed Oberst and then used Airboy's own plane, Birdie, to rescue him and her three comrades.

>From that point on, she joined the Allies and fought on their side for the remainder of the war. She continued to aid Airboy every once in a while. Their feelings for each other grew and, as Airboy got older, their relationship got a lot more physical. If they'd had more than seven adventures together, their romance could have been positively epic.

That was one of the great things about Johns's work in JSA, it was obvious he did his homework on the history of the team and their legacies and touched on a lot of aspects of that history in the run.

I recommend it to anyone who's trying to get into the DC Universe at large, because it really illustrates just how interconnected the post-Crisis universe was and how the superhero communities branched out and interacted with each other.

Alan has Starheart magic bullshit

Jay has Speedforce

Carter was resurrected via Thanagarian magic-science and has the reincarnation thing on top of it

Ted Grant has a magical curse that backfired and literally gave him a cat's nine lives

And as for the rest of them, the JSA was stuck in Limbo fighting off Ragnarock (yes the literal twilight of the gods) for a long time, which removed them from the timestream for a bit. Then most of them were involved with Zero Hour on top of it which further fucked around with the flow of time for many of the members, so all of them got affected in different ways.

Like Ted Knight was physically in his 50's despite being just as old as the rest of them (something he has a fair bit of guilt about in Robinson's Starman series)

Contrast that with Wesley Dodds, who aged normally and was well into his 80s when he appeared in the same series.

Most of them were old when they got out of Limbo, Alan got deaged later and they started writing Jay and Ted younger because of speedforce/magic bullshit

then they all died during Zero Hour so it didn't matter anyway fuck Zero Hour

They have some other interesting other Golden Agers. Blonde Phantom, the Black Marvel, the original Vision, the Blazing Skull, the Destroyer, the Liberty Legion (Thin Man, Blue Diamond, Jack Frost, Red Raven), Miss America and the Whizzer (who served on both the Liberty Legion and later The Invaders).
Then there were those guys on The Twelve (which sadly never got finished).

Although specifically, a Yankee, from the Northeast.

This one is evocative of a colonial era Yankee, circa the Revolutionary War, making him especially patriotic or something.

I believe Astro City had a guy who was a tribute to this kind of character that was surprisingly badass, a bit of a legend, who always showed up and disappeared suddenly, whenever his country most needed him. Like a ghost or tutelary spirit of AMERICA.

They were actually going to do a Silver Age story that picked up from the end of that, picking up the start of the Silver Age characters and comics in DC, but they scrapped the idea later because reportedly New Frontier was already too close to what they had planned.

So what's better to get a complete collection of golden age comics and beyond: buying 75 Years of DC Comics, the individual Golden, Silver, and Bronze Age collections, or a combination of them with the character specific 75 Year collections and/or Golden Age Omnibuses?
It seems like 75 years is supposed to be all of them but I have doubts.
Which combination(s) would provide a more complete collection?

I might make one today. I want to make categories based on publishing house (Timely/Marvel, National Periodicals/DC, Hillman, ACG)

And then I want to add a category for books made after the Golden Age set or refrenceing events during the Golden Age. Like the Elsewords book by James Robinson, JSA: The Golden Age, Dynamite Entertainment's Project: Superpowers and Alan Moore's Tom Strong and Terra Obscura.
>>
>>77522090
If your going to put on modern comics about the Golden Age add Robinson's run on Starman (one of the biggest love letters to the golden age of comics) and the Vertigo series Sandman Mystery Theater.

That series had a lot of Film Noir references.
