I personally cannot enjoy Rugrats due to how the characters are drawn.
It's a pity too, since I like the show.
I get that it's done on purpose, but I think it turned away a lot of people.
First I thought it was an ATHF ripoff, then I sort of saw the difference in style, but still found it repulsive, THEN I got used to it and considered it acceptable.
...But still, I realized I am used to the main cast. Every time a NEW character enters the frame I groan, and it takes me a few minutes to adjust. Why does everything NEED to be so ugly? I understand the Sheriff, he's fun, but the rest are not only ugly characters (which I can get behind), but purposefully UNAPPEALING to look at. You can make an ugly character that doesn't hurt to watch.
There is so much brown on the screen, too, the sound is top-notch, but the backgrounds feel bleak in a way that I feel could be avoided.
Ugly, stylized, stylish and appealing can be blended together, even though it's hard. But the show doesn't try. It wants to be ugly in an ugly way.
I guess I'm "ok" with it, but I sure would prefer a more cohesive, pleasant art style.

However, these Canadian cartoons don't get government funding, and since they're a requirement, they usually get stiffed on budget. A lot of Canadian talent usually ends up migrating south to where there's actual work with actual pay. What we have is just underfunded, under-supported, and under-the-par cartoons.
