Give me one good reason why Lex Luthor isn't the greatest comic book villain of all time.

You can't.

Could Doom, believably, beat Darkseid?
>>
>>77450826
Yeah, war world was really great under his comand.... oh, wait a minute... it wasnt!
maybe he can blame this on a doom bot.
Btw, Doom crying for Paris when?

Doom would be shackled in a slave pit in Apokalips so fast his head would spin.

Because every time someone calls him a villain, someone scrambles to say that he's the hero humanity deserves. How the hell are you gonna call him the greatest villain if you can't even call him a villain?

Find me someone who gives up ultimately power PURELY to keep their hatred for their enemy.

Luthor ended up losing control of a single country so you can fuck off.

A fleshwound that was ultimately of little importance, especially after he had taken over the Earth with little resistance, and plunged the multiverse itself into a black hole.

No.

Doom has conquered the planet with less effort than Darkseid and his Anti-Life Equation did in final crisis.

Doom lost for squirrels, and became traumatized.

Well at that point he was in a far weaker body than normal. And Batman was using a bullet built specifically to kill New Gods.

We're talking about who makes a great villain, as in who is the best nemesis for the hero of the story.

It's hard to find one better than Luthor. He really is the perfect villain for Superman.

One of my favorite Lex moments was the Mr. Mind issue from The Black Ring arc, where we see Lex as he sees himself. And, lo and behold, he thinks that he's Prometheus, stealing fire from gods and giving it to people. I love that shit, despite how obvious it is, because it shows just how deep his delusion is.

Another good one was the prophecy in darkseid war. Lives in metropolis, is an orphan son of farmers and has saved the world and lex is like yep that all checks out
>>
>>77455860

Although, that's more excusable than usual, because his hate-on for Superman is probably bigger than ever before, considering what had just happened and all. Not to mention that, if he didn't lie, they would've either killed him then and there, or abandoned him, which would have resulted in a more prolonged death.

When it rests firmly beneath the heel of his boot.

What separates Doom from Luthor is that the latter is just some fool with an obsession, while the former is a man with a plan for humanity.

Luthor will gladly ignore all other threats to the world, or even outright sacrifice mankind to bring an end to Superman.

Doom confronts all threats, and is even willing to step aside to let others -even his personal nemesis- take the spotlight and the glory when the task is within their abilities.

Doom does not risk the life of humanity's savior for the sake of fool's errands, regardless of how much adoration it might earn. Doom needs none other than Doom.

Doom is the one who will save us all, for Doom is the only one who cares about continuation of mankind, while still possessing the necessary foresight and will to make the hard decisions, to lead us when all others have fallen and failed.

I just realized something:
>Etymologically, the name is derived from the Greek Ἀλέξανδρος (Aléxandros), meaning "Defender of the people" or "Defending men"[1] and also, "Protector of men", a compound of the verb ἀλέξειν alexein, "to ward off, to avert, to defend"[2] and the noun ἀνήρ anēr, "man" (GEN ἀνδρός andros).[3]

Do you think they developed Lex's whole, "destroy the alien usurper, give humanity back to the humans" spiel because of the meaning behind his name?

I really liked Thanos as the Surfer's nemesis in the 80s/90s. It was a nice foil to his sotic nature, having a powerful, calculating enemy more ruled by passions. It made their team ups so much sweeter.

Probably the other way round, they likely called him Lex because of his character.
>>
>>77458974
But I thought at the time of his creation he just wanted revenge on Superman/Superboy for making him bald in a lab accident...?
>>
>>77450809
He's selfish, petty, and with no good justification for being the asshole he is beyond "muh hair".
>>
>>77459140
Since when was having no good motivation a bad thing for a villain? It works for the Joker and million other compelling evil psychopaths. I personally like how he is intelligent and thinks he's better than everyone else so does bullshit mental gymnastics to justify his evil, but in the end is just an asshole like every other low-minded crazed killer bad guy.
>>
>>77459113
Whoa whoa whoa,

Lex Luthor's first motivation was nonexistent. He was a redheaded scientist that wanted to take over the world. He was just able to stick around as a villain because Superman stories eventually started to gravitate towards sci-fi instead of gangsters.

Then eventually he became bald, then when Superboy was a comic they gave him that smallville origin.

When the Donner movie came out, Luthor wasn't written as a scientist, but more like a really smart criminal.

Byrne's man of steel reboot, sort of based on decisions made for the movie, created the Luthor we know today: a scientific genius that also just happens to be the most powerful businessman in metropolis.
>>
>>77459140
selfish and petty define Luthor.

The best thing about Luthor is his modern portrayal paints a reflection on American (and possibly world) values. Luthor is the greatest a man can be without virtue, an Alexander the Great or a Napoleon for the modern age. He feels inhibited by Superman, but his pettiness and selfishness define his villainy. If you asked somebody on the street who they would like to be, they would say somebody way closer to Lex Luthor than Superman.

It's why Eisenberg is Zuckerjobs Lex. He works because we sympathize with a terrible human being because of his achievements and drives instead of rooting for a person that serves humanity.
>>
>>77459140
He has a good justification now.
>>
>>77455860

>Doom will gladly ignore all other threats to the world, or even outright sacrifice mankind to bring an end to RICHAAAAAAAAAAARDS.

Fixed that for you. Besides every time Doom gets power, he either gives it up willingly because he cares more about fighting Reed than mankind, or he loses it through his own incompetence.
>>
>>77459666
>Byrne's man of steel reboot, sort of based on decisions made for the movie, created the Luthor we know today: a scientific genius
Byrne dropped this. Waid explicitly did them both, but Loeb started arcing Lex toward his roots.

/co/ is a deeply weird place.
>>
>>77450809
Difference in opinion probably. I love Lex but his petty jealousy for Superman can turn off some people.
>>
Luthor thoroughly is absolutely right about modern Superman. He might be right for the wrong reasons, but his overall platform is inarguable.
>>
>>77450809
His origin is like "Oh my god, my hair, my pretty pretty hair!"
