There have been plenty of darker, more "modern" portrayals of Superman.
And Superman is hardly the only character with a tendency to resist the moodier, morally ambiguous "modern" style. What can you say about Superman's sunny optimism that couldn't be said of Shazam or Captain America? Or Batman, the edgelord who got "Brave and the Bold," "Li'l Gotham," and an ongoing based on the Adam West show?
Ultimately you're just cherrypicking portrayals that support your preferred conclusions.

it's not that any attempt to modernize him is looked at as edgy and shitty. It's that people have conflated "modern" with edgy and shitty, so that's what they do for their attempts to modernize him.
modernization could mean "giving him a career that isn't a newspaper reporter" which is normally approached from a stupid angle (HURR NOW HE WRITES FOR HUFFPOST), but wouldn't have to be.

I think the best way to modernize Superman isn't to try to give him angst. It's to give him regular, everyday problems that most people can relate with, that aren't the sort of grand operatic problems someone like Batman may have, like seeing your parents shot of having your son get shot or having everyone you know always being shot.
Like, focus on the fact that despite being physically invincible and amazing, when it comes to the human core, he's just like us and has kitchen sink problems that have to do with work and family and stuff.
