I've seen more people on /co/ interested in Tom King lately so I'm storytiming his (fantastic) first ever script for DC here.

It's a stand alone oneshot, no prior knowledge required, just jump in!
>>
>>77434011
The art is kinda bad, but stick with it anyway, it's worth it.
>>
>>77434041
Looks like Didio finally got his wish.
>>
FYI you may want to read this twice.
>>
>>77434101
>>77434103
Pretty much required though if someone just read Grayson 12 and started cluemastering everything they might get it.
>>
>>77434142
>>
>>77434011
For what it's worth, this was my favorite single issue of 2014.
Although Pax Americana came close. I liked the simplicity in Grayson better.
>>77434103
Reading all of King's work twice is recommended if you want to increase what you get out of it.
There are lots small details you miss first time through.

Yeah, even while the artist isn't great, King still makes it work.

I thought Mooney did a fine job with the first Annual though. Even then, you still get all the little character tics
>>
>>77434186

Eh, still not a huge fan.
Though what artist would you most want for this issue, /co/?

>>

>>77434352
I saw it as her saying that he wants someone dangerous, unsafe, and out of his comfort zone. Which is basically the theme of this book.
>>
>>77434352
>>77434353
Yeah the spectrum of reviews of this comics is kinda funny.
It's almost like a good litmus test for reviewers - now more people know King and are likely to give him good reviews because they know you're supposed to like him. Back then, we knew very little. You can see who actually reads comics and has some degree of reading comprehension and who just follows the herd and skimmed it.
>>
>>77434352
I think Babs said something similar when Dick banged Helena pre-N52 and then called her to tell her about it. She was also bitter and jealous at the time, though.

>>
>>77435638
I have started writing comic reviews and I am amazed by how much you miss if you don't really take a hard look at the issue overall.

A lot of complaints I've noticed about comics is about what it didn't have, instead of people actually looking at the story and seeing what it does have.
>>
>>77435426
Good taste, anon.
Dicknighter makes me sad though, because I love their interactions and chemistry, but I can't think about them longterm because Apollo.

>>
>>77435727
>A lot of complaints I've noticed about comics is about what it didn't have
This is one of my main gripes with reviews in general, not just comics. Too often people judge things based on what they want them to be, and criticise them for not being things that they weren't trying to be in the first place.

Like, I can understand looking at things that way, but a lot people tend to put it as an objective bad thing.
>>
>>77435831

Well, that and even if Dick was bi, he doesn't have an Elektra complex.

>9999. DickBabs

>>
>>77435952
>that a writer doesn't write a character identically to a previous one
It's not even just that, they seem to want a straight forward hero beats up bad guy book and think he's "incompetent" for not immedietly saving the day and moving on to the next villain.
Same with Kyle and Omega men actually.

I like how this one presents things from both sides.

Most of them kind of suck Batman's dick and act like he's automatically right about not killing.
>>
>>77451555
Yeah, he's good about not just telling you what to think and showing you instead.
Although another of King's issues (3) leaned pretty heavily on "guns are bad"
I didn't have a problem with it personally, but I think some people found it too heavy handedly so.
>>
>>77451923
I think it's more "guns are useful, but shouldn't be the first resort to solve every problem."
>>
>>77451923
I think the idea is that Dick's words were enough. He was enough. Can we all not agree that if you can talk someone out of a crime and into surrendering, violence isn't necessary at all? Right?

And Dick refusing to use a gun, I think, was just him to trying to hold onto some pieces of his old life, while also trying to hide some of his true level of competence.

I imagine reviewers probably went like, "wow, guns are bad. So bad. Veggies are good for you. This was soooo deep."

When the whole point was just to illustrate the gray world of spies, the effectiveness of heroes like Dick, and what violence can lead to. And also get him laid.

I'm really glad /co/ actually likes Grayson, so many people who unrationally hate this run, but at least there are way more people who love it or like it.
>>
>>77452041
>so many people who unrationally hate this run
In a way, I almost see that as a good thing that's it's kinda controversial - as irritating as those people can be.

>I imagine reviewers probably went like, "wow, guns are bad. So bad. Veggies are good for you. This was soooo deep."
>>77451947
>I think it's more "guns are useful, but shouldn't be the first resort to solve every problem."
Yeah, that was my takeaway too, but I'm english and a lot of American views on guns seem kinda crazy and don't make a lot of sense to us, so I didn't think I was the best judge on it.
>>
>>77451555
I know it's a bad-end alternate future, but I found it odd (though not in a bad way) that King had Dick straight up kill someone here.
Especially considering how he's portrayed him in the main timeline, and talked about him in interviews, I thought killing would have been a definite no go for him.

Any thoughts?
>>
I'm curious now, I wasn't reading DC when this happened, what did the other ongoings do for their Futures End tie-ins?

Dare I ask what Lobdell did with RHATO?
>>
>>77452423
I guess it's a part of the "blood on hands" and responsability sides from >>77434311 and >>77434447
>>
>>77452423
King does a good job of showing how Dick ended up this way, though. Helena's speech about responsibility and his guilt over enabling KGBeast to murder innocents weighed heavily on him
>>
>>77452869
I think every book did it. For the first few years of the reboot they had September theme months and Futures End got one.
>>
>>77452869
Synder and Fawkes did a prequel to Synder's Detective Comics 27 story that was decent
Jurgens did a Booster Gold one shot that was really good and got our hopes up for Convergence
Swamp Thing got a white lantern ring
Wilson wrote one of the worst comics of all time for Earth 2 (like, HORRID)
>>
>>77453684
Thanks.
>Wilson wrote one of the worst comics of all time for Earth 2
Wow. I need to look this one up now
>Jurgens
>really good
I'm skeptical
>>
>>77452869
Hal Jordan almost did and got stuck into the source wall for safekeeping
John Stewart turned into a dick, killed Indigo-1 and got recruited into the Indigo corps
Guy Gardner became a Blue Lantern
Kyle killed Carol and turned into a dick
Sinestro broke out of space jail and resurrected his corps as Black Lanterns
>>
>>77452869
Funnily enough that Futures End issue was probably the best issue of RHATO Lobdell did.
It was mostly Jason by himself.
>>
>>77454335
You need to read the Convergance follow up for BG as well
>>
>>77454555
>best issue of RHATO
It's was still bad though, right?
>>
>>77454602
It was mostly mediocre.
>>
>>77454428
That Red Lanterns one was awesome. I consider that to be the end of Soule's run
>>
>>77455473
>I consider that to be the end of Soule's run
I haven't read that, did it get worse after that.
>>
>>77455550
Soule's next three issues was the Godhead crossover. Then Landry Walker took over, and all Guy did was walk around moping about how he's angry.

The Futures End one-shot gives closure to the characters.
>>
>>77455473
I thought the GL and Sinestro ones were good too, GL was depressing but done pretty well and the Sinestro one was rad

Red Lanterns was great, like >>77456496 said it had good closure
>>
>>77456536
What happened to Soule?
His DC stuff seems pretty good, but his Marvel stuff has been mainly mediocre to bad.
>>
>>77456642
I really don't know, maybe he just spread himself too thin? Maybe his style was more suited to Red Lanterns and Swamp Thing than his Marvel stuff?

I feel like the Inhumans and Wolverine stuff he did had a lot of editorial drive behind it where Swampy and RL likely didn't (SMWW was his worst DC thing and that has editorial all over it too) so that may be it
>>
>>77456695
Yeah, probably.
I'm most nervous about his Daredevil - Daredevil is a character not really effected by editorial and crossovers and stuff like that, so maybe it'll be better.
I hope he builds on Waid's run though, instead of just reverting back to Bendis/Brubaker DD.
>>
>>77434011
Silly /co/, this is a 1/10 issue: http://www.newsarama.com/22048-best-shots-rapid-reviews-death-of-wolverine-1-green-arrow-futures-end-more.html
Unlike such gems like Death of Wolverine of course!
>>
>>77458753
That's just embarrassing for the reviewer
>>
>>77458753

I want to see how many of these reviewers who trashed Grayson Futures End have been showering Vision #1, Omega Men #1, Grayson #12, and Darkseid War: Green Lantern with praise.
>>
>>77458958
Exactly.
They might like King now, because they now they know that King is a writer we're supposed to like.
I bet if that issue came out today it would get a lot more "Tom King writes another amazing issue! 10/10"

I mean, look at the range of scores here: http://comicbookroundup.com/comic-books/reviews/dc-comics/grayson-futures-end/1
>>
>>77458753

>>
>>77452041
>I think the idea is that Dick's words were enough. He was enough. Can we all not agree that if you can talk someone out of a crime and into surrendering, violence isn't necessary at all? Right?
Yeah, that was my takeaway too.
Also, later in issue 8, King has Dick actually fire a gun at the Paragon thing to defeat it because that time it was necessary (and it wasn't human so fair game I suppose).

Also, King's mentioned he's had to carry a gun for his job before - I think he'd have a more nuanced few on guns than your average comics writer.
>>
>>77459257
Speaking of the gun in #8, I found it odd I haven't even seen anyone mention it. It feels like it might be significant that Dick actually used a gun, though that's largely because it feels so odd seeing him with a gun.
>>
>>77434335
I might be an idiot, but didn't he just kill the people in the bus? And is washing his hands clean? But later (timewise) he still doesn't kill?
>>
>>77434335
It doesn't count maybe because its indirect?
Happens all the time with batman.

>1.0 Newsarama - Aaron Duran
>It's rare to read a book that's this mean, unbalanced, and poorly executed from one of the major publishers. Rare and a real shame.
>2.0 Doom Rocket - Jarrod Jones
>It's not clear what King had hoped towring out of this implausible "what if" scenario, but if the future holds that Dick Grayson becomes a killer for the sake of shock value, then count me out.Grayson: Futures End#1 is another grisly reminder of how a bloated crossover can utterly disrupt an otherwise fantastic book with its own capitalistic insistence. Ostensibly all we've done is pay $4 for a pretty cover with nothing worthwhile inside.
>3.0 Infinite Comix - Brandon Stines

>Every comment is people saying how fucking wrong that review is.
>>
>>77462953
The IGN one is like that too - just full of comments correcting the review.
It's so embarassing for a reviewer to be that dumb that it takes fucking IGN's userbase to explain things to you.
>>
>>77462953
>>77463086
And I think it was one of these sites where another reviewer did a review of the tie in and slammed the first reviewer for being an idiot in the opening paragraph.

You can't spell Ignorant without IGN
>>
Why are King fans on /co/ so insufferable? I keep coming into these threads because I enjoy the man's work, and it seems like every time its a bunch of guys felatting each other over how much smarter they are than everyone else.
>>
>>77463728
You can say that about literally every writer with a burgeoning/strong fanbase.

But for King in particular, it's a shock for pretty much anyone considering the complaints lobbied make it obvious that people aren't even taking the time to actually read the issue.
>>
>>77463728

I personally like how wanting him to be chained forever to DC is fine but wanting him to write Marvel books is fucking blasphemy
>>
>>77464032
I don't think there's anyone here who wants Vision taken away before it ends.
>>
>>77464032
I want him to write both

I just don't want him to get a Marvel exclusive because that's like some kind of weird guarantee that his output will get magically worse
>>
>>77464032
It mostly stems from the fact that he has written the best Dick Grayson in years, they just don't want his run to end. But man to be honest, most people that read King's DC books also loved Vision and would love to see how it progresses, I pray that it survives for longer than Omega-men since that was a book that died before its time.

Yes
>>
>>77464169
It is getting its 12 issues, but King always said he would have liked for it to go beyond 12 issues if the sales were good. But it's a pity it didn't sell. Such a nice attempt to make a non GL centric cosmic book
>>

As far as we know it still is, #8 was solicited for January

Dick was sad that he couldn't date Starfire, so he became Starfire instead

Good advice. Dang, that story must've been complicated to arrange just-so.
>>
>>77464468
>must've been complicated to arrange just-so
Not really, it follows one direction throughout the entire story, it's always going backwards, now a real clusterfuck to read would be the PAX Americana multiversity issue, that shit went back and forth constantly and jumped all over the place.
>>
>>77460040
I think the point is that he uses it as a utility. He used it in issue #2 to detonate an explosive as well. He just doesn't use guns against fleshy humans.

Nice find.
>>
>>77472821
I really wish we could just have another artist redo the issue with the same script.
Has that ever happened before?
>>
>>77463728
For this thread, it's mainly because the reviews are just so bad, even for the low bar we have for comic reviewers.
When this issue came out, he was a complete unknown and didn't have the critical acclaim he does now, its kind of shocking to see some of these reviews.
http://comicbookroundup.com/comic-books/reviews/dc-comics/grayson-futures-end/1
Like it's okay not liking the book, but damn these people either didn't even read the book or have the reading comprehension of a 5-year old.
>>
>>77464032
>but wanting him to write Marvel books is fucking blasphemy
/co/ is pretty anti-marvel right now (not without reason)
Personally, I'd like him not chained to any company, but I can see why some might be worried about him going to Marvel after what happened to Soule and Lemire.
>>
>>77474744
Is it actually that bad?

I thought Soule's She-Hulk was good, though, and Daredevil looks promising.

Haven't read any of Lemire's work for Marvel, but I'm really looking forward to Moon Knight.
>>
>>77474811
Soule's marvel stuff has been pretty mediocre to bad imo. Not sure about She-Hulk though, I'm mainly thinking about Inhumans and Wolverine.

And Lemire's Extraordinary X-Men is terrible so far. But I suppose that's more Lemire being bad on team books than Marvel.
Wasn't impressed by his Hawkeye either, really.

I'm hoping Soule's Daredevil is okay, since that tends to stay away from editorial interference. Has there been a preview yet?
>>
>>77462944
Newsarama has multiple reviewers.

>>77463149
Yeah, I think this is what I was referring to.
>>
>>77464032
Because Marvel is pretty bad right now and I'd like to see some new blood on Marvel too, not just people that worked for DC working for Marvel now. DC's gone out there and recruited new blood in the last year or so. Marvel is just hiring people that worked for DC, sometimes even being petty and giving them exclusives.
>>
>>77475172
>sometimes even being petty and giving them exclusives.
I don't disagree that Marvel is in a weak place right now, but I don't think exclusives are so much "petty" as a good business decision.
>>
>>77475032
Closest thing we got is the bit about his Chinese buddy's origin in Point One, but it wasn't enough to get any real idea of how the book will turn out.
>>
>>77475172
A lot of people in Marvel are pretty burned off at DC, like Waid and Robinson. Heck, Marvel's main staff of Bendis and friends constantly mock DC yet the one time they tweet a gif of the sad racoon from that movie in taking place somewhere in the galaxy everyone starts licking their boots saying how great Marvel is and how they really care about DC despite the fact they're one of the main reasons on why we'll never get a Marvel/DC crossover again.
>>
>>77476259
>reasons on why we'll never get a Marvel/DC crossover again.
Really, why?
>>
>>77434041
Pencilling is okay, but inking is shit. Some artists can do their own inks, this guy obviously shouldn't.
>>
>>77475810
It's petty to prevent a creator to work at your direct competition.
>>
>>77477194
It's not good for the quality of comics in the industry, sure, but it seems like a pretty obvious decision from a business stand point.
>>
>>77475922
>Chinese buddy's origin in Point One
Huh, what was that?
>>
>>77478914
Its sort of the intro to Contest of Champions. Uses that book's set up as a framing device for a bunch of short looks at some of the other ANAD books by those books' writers. One of them was Daredevil and it introduced the invisible Chinese guy that Matt's hanging out with in the new book.
>>
>>77476259

Yeah, the Wilson Earth 2 comic let everyone know what was coming: someone with shitty ideas that he thought were cool, and an attempt at a complex structure by someone without the skills to write it.
