It played out in-game for the longest time too, which was kind of neat. The king Wrynn mdel was complete shit, but he was always viewable on Alcaz Island for 9 or so patches, way outta the way, and there was a long, hard-to-find and finish Alliance quest line where you expose lady Prestor in the throne room of Stormwind as Onyxia, and she fucks off to her cave on the other continent and you get a nice rare item for it. Eventually this comic came out to facilitate Varian coming back to Stormwind, Anduin getting a slightly older NPC model, and Broll & Valeera showing up in game as NPCs for maybe a week. Also, fuck Horde because that was all Alliance only stuff and if you played Horde too fucking bad for you.
Varian's a much bigger deal now, Anduin too since then, since around Wrath of the Lich King.
